I did mine and it was fine. Parking brake, chock wheels, and put it in drive (engine running). Grinder with cutoff wheel will do the hack real clean as the spinning shaft gives it a lathe effect rather than hacking through the output.
The front ds you're using is out of a slushbox XJ, right...
I know bassett wheels are big in circle track racing among other things, and I stumbled across these. They seem pretty lightweight (for steel wheels), the price is right, and they're made here in the USA. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I run a '96 XJ, so I'm lacking in experience with the renix jeeps, but...
HO factory header and take a dremel tool to the stock airbox. Take the stock hole (sized similar to a deck of cards) and extend it toward the fender, and back. As the airbox tapers for fender clearance, taper the hole...
It made me sick to see the "before and after" shots of this... when the "after" shot was of this Comanche upside down at the edge of a creek. Short of paint, it's as good now as it was before the accident!
The under-seat mounting location would work well for me, too. If I were on some epic expedition and the Jeep were full of gear and 14 illegals, it'd make sense to mount it in a more accessible location, even for a "this trip only" basis.
x2. Napa usually pretty good, tell them you want "domestic" (made in USA) parts.
(their "non heavy duty" (aka greaseable) u-joints are made by federal mogul, as are a lot of their parts. Heavy duty u-joints are solid, so they can take more power. I wouldn't use them on a Jeep as you can't...
Did you mark where the rotor was pointing before pulling the distributor? (that works only if you don't crank the engine over before the dizzy is reinstalled)
If yes, then it doesn't matter. Otherwise, top dead center nearly always refers to compression stroke.
I got wagner pads, they're good... I might try EBC pads (their street compound) next.
They squeeze wagner discs. The wagner shoes press against original drums.
It's interesting how quality (any brand that is an OEM supplier) stops better than the white-box mystery brakes. Step up to quality...
when was the last time it had a good tune up (with quality parts... avoid cheap crap imported parts)?
Did you try seafoam-ing it? Make sure to get some through the idle air passage, or remove and clean it.
Custom springs: Eaton Detroit Spring

They have an excellent repuatation in the auto/truck restoration industry, and they'll whip up a set of springs for a XJ too. It'll help to know what your rig weighs, ideally weight on front axle, and weight on rear axle. It'll...
It'd come in handy if the main were to ever die. (I'd run the main as a regular ol juice box, and a yellow top (deep cycle) as the secondary juice box. Hit a switch, hit the starter, and you're off. No wandering around with a pair of battery cables.
