Ecomike, wire you're looking for according to the '84 FSM should be a violet one (actually looks more like tan on mine) terminated with a black female bullet connector. Should be around the same place as in the 4.0s. I don't know what the PO did on yours, but that flat connector you mention...

At least on the WJ they're not c-clip. For one, no mention of it in the FSM and having replaced one on an '02 WJ a few months back, no sign of a c-clip anywhere. Glad for that, less work. Here's a pic of the old axle shaft:

Might want to check the condition of your headliner. When the foam backing on the cloth starts to break down it'll sift through and coat the whole interior in fine grayish/black dust. Hit it with an open palm a few times and see if your hand gets covered in the same dust. Certainly took me by...
