Yellow fogs(help deciding)

Ok I want to replace the bulbs in my stock fog lights to turn them yellow for bad weather use and also that cool yellow look. Replacing the entire fog light setup is not an option so please don't recommend that ;) Sofar I've narrowed down to 3 types if anyone has had any experience with these?

I'm tempted to go hella even though the optilux is their low end model line it's still hella. I've read some people saying optilux is Less yellow than their yellow star line which seemed strange to me...

I just saw the PIAA bulbs for pretty cheap actually($38 compared to 20-25 for the others). Are the PIAA as great as I am reading about?

If you're going halogen than I suggest you pick up two cheap sets off ebay (one set as a spare).
All those halogen kits have a pretty short lifespan.... even the expensive ones.

After I posted I started to look at the HId kits as well as an option. Where did you order from? Will you have to upgrade your wiring for the kit or no?

Whatever I get it will not be a chinese knock off from ebay however.
 
You'll be hard pressed to find a really good aftermarket kit - eBay or otherwise. Even the pricey ones are suspect. OEM is your safest bet, but there's no such thing as a 3000k H3 OEM kit. They're all 4100-4300k, D1S or D2S.

I won't say where I bought my current kits until they're installed, and I know they work properly. I bought a 3000k kit for my projector fogs, and 6000k kit to convert my hella 500s. I used to run some pricey 6000k ultinons in my fogs until one of them blew up (bottom line - even the pricey stuff can be crap - aftermarket HID is hit or miss).

Yea I'm looking for someone local to buy HIDs off if I go that route. Another forum had a group buy on HIDs that went wrong fast. Most had problems but they all had life time warranties. Only problem with the warranty is you had to ship the old one back to china then pay to have the replacement shipped from china...

I see Bosch sells h3 HIDs just not the right color bulb which is no big deal. Bulbs are cheap and easy to get in any color. As long as the ballest is quality I'd be happy.

tcm_glx on here sells HID's not sure the country of origin or anything but if anything goes wrong, he'll make it right for you. I have some from DDMtuning that I like a lot and the 5000k Hi/Lo kit was 73 bucks shipped. I will be getting another set for my Hella's once i get them and my new bumper installed.

I was looking at HIDs from that sight last night. how does their HI/LO work? Is it two filiments, two HID bulbs, solinoid, HID/Incandecent, magic, ect...
 
Its one bulb that rotates upwards via a servo or some kind of Tom Cruise voodoo! :dunno: :D They work great but I have a funky glare in from the housings. I am thinking of removing the reflector to see if that cures it but I am not too terribly worried about it. The only problem I have is a possible bad relay on my HD harness.

They're not real bosch; bosch doesn't do aftermarket ballasts. The ballasts you saw were rebranded. You'll see allot of cheap chinese stuff with fancy brand-name stickers in this business.

You're also getting some glare. I'm not picking on you; I'm just pointing out the nature of aftermarket HIDs.

FYI Baja HID has both types of hi/low kits available - the dual filament (hid lows and halogen highs) and the solenoid type which moves the bulb back and forth.

Two examples. The top one has two bulbs, both HID. The lower has a bulb that moves in and out on a solinoid.

I have seen one with two slanted bulbs, and with a bulb that moves in an arc via solinoid.

I have also seen the one with HIDlow/Filiment High, but I think that's silly
 
I think you screwed up some place on your images. They both show dual bulbs.

I'd go for the dual bulb over the solenoid. The High halogen is crappy. Small halogen.

But wait, isn't there a delay on the HID bulbs between when you flip the switch and the bulb lights?
 
I decided to go with an h3 35w 3000k HID setup, I also won't say from where or what brand until I get them in and test them out. I figure worst case they suck and I put them in my supra which has projector fogs and never driven in bad weather.

I'm hoping for the best though but expecting problems based on everything I've read here and other places. I think a simple fog HID kit is a good way to test the waters before I think about going HID headlights.

As for headlights, I can't think of the last time I used my high beams...
 
Opps, yeah I messed up the image.

I am going with 3000k HID for the fog lights on my daily driver XJ. If I like them, the off road XJ and everything else will end up with them.
 
Well, I got my hid set up and ran into a small problem. The hid bulb is a bit longer than the standard h3 bulb. The back of the hid bulb sticks out further so the housing cover can't close. I'm looking at cutting a hole in the cover then sealing it to keep it water tight.

I did a test run with them though and they seriously put out some light. I had 1 hid exposed under the jeep and I could have read a book on the other side of my garage with no other lights. With the bulb in the housing and properly mounted up the light was awesome. The cut off was really good I thought and not a lot of glare for having not been aimed or fully bolted down. The yellow from the 3000k is good, not overly yellow but certainly nowhere near normal headlight color. I would assume the light from the 2500k nokya and others would stand out more but I'm ok with the 3000k so far.

Hopefully I can get the housing issues taken care of and figure a good spot for the ballast then I'll get some pics.
 
I didn't get my kits yet, but than again stuff always takes longer coming to Canada.
You're having spacing problems because you ordered a standard H3 conversion opposed
to mini H3C bulb that has the exact same dimensions of a standard Halogen H3. Here's
a comparison (my old H3C vs my Ultinon H3)

Most of these aftermarket HID kits have a rubber plug on the wires. That means you
can drill a 1" on the back of your fog housing, pull the wires through and seal it with
the rubber plug.... like this:
