Hi all my 87 Wagoneer has a yellow box below the dash on the drivers side that says AMC and there are several places you can insert a screwdriver into and make adj for -Steering wheel center- Slow speed steering- then there is one that says - Steering wheel normal- what do they do and if my wheel is REAL easy to turn ( I do not like ) will adjusting this box help. If so is that all there is to it just turn the insert and you are done or do I need to adj something else? THANKS

THIS SITE HAS BECOME MY BEST FRIEND SINCE MY FIRST JEEP AND IT IS GREATLY APPRITIATED KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ALL!!!

That was my first guess but I found the cruise box a little further under the dash. This box screws onto the lower dash panel and you can get to it real easy. Im almost sure its for the steering wheel but ????? This is a 87 Wagoneer Limited XJ if that helps.

I have always wounderd the same thing, what the heck do the adjustments do? I messed with it and noticed nothing but my cruise control never worked to begin with. Now it is unplugged and removed, noticed no change in anything.

With your box unplugged do your still have wiper delay, or just High/low speed?

Actually, that description reminds me of the "emissions timer" thingy on the Renix XJs. At 87,500 miles or so, that was supposed to illuminate the Check Engine and remind you to change the O2 sensor.

Yes unplugged cruise still works and wipers work high and delay. The maint timer is under there also but mine is unhooked, Im going to remove it. It is definitly for the steering because it says STEERING SLOW- STEERING CENTER- AND STEERING HIGH. I adjusted it on the SLOW side with a small flat tip and the steering wheel seems to be tighter. Does this make sense?

Got pics?

Give me 5 MIN

I dont know if this will work or not I cant seem to get my pics on.

No luck I have the pics can I send them to you in email? Maybe you can post?

No luck. O well the box is yellow and Im sure it has something to do with the steering.

No it doesn't make sense because your steering is not electric. That yellow box is the cruise control brain and "steering" refers to the feedback loop for controlling the vehicle speed. Mucking with the controls will cause poor speed control.

Here's a picture, btw http://i6.ebayimg.com/03/i/05/fc/6a/da_1.JPG

Well here it is and THANKS lawsoncl. SUPER IDEA duh!!:badpc:

The FSM shows the procedure for adjusting this and what the controls do, btw. The slow speed adjustment controls the minimum speed that the cruise will engage. The centering adjustment controls how far above or below speed you need to be before it tries to compensate (ie the hysteresis). The sensitivity is how aggressively it changes the throttle position to compensate (is the feedback gain).

That makes sense I will go with that. Then why did my steering get tighter?? O well maybe I have another problem.....
THANKS!!
