Why are KJs so faster than XJs while the power difference isnt that huge 210 vs 190 HO?
The torque to wieght ratio is higher on the XJ and the XJ is supposed to be lighter!!!
I have a 94 6 cyl Auto I was racing my friends KJ and the guy flew by me @ 60 and I couldnt catch him .There was a huge difference in perfrormance I dont think its just the engine may be the gear ratios or the rear diff !!!!!!!!!!!!

A 4.0 XJ with a healthy engine should destroy a 3.7 KJ. The XJ has better power/weight and torque/weight ratios than the KJ despite the KJ having 20hp/10lbft more. The reason is that the KJ is 500-600lb heavier.
Maybe your engine isn't putting out the full 190hp that it should.

Tell us more about your XJ and the situation.

Stock gears with oversize tires?

What gear were you in when he passed you? The auto takes a blink to downshift and rev up, and sounds like he was already at speed.

Have you raced him from a standing start?

If you're going on only being blown away once, then you're not giving your XJ a fair chance. Run with him some more. Manually shift your auto and see how it does.

how come my renix isnt faster than a stock turbo dodge minivan? i can launch like a mf but i get two cars off the line and the minivan catches at about 70mph?

edit:
does manually shifting the aw4 make a difference? it will go to 5k in first and second pulls to about 70 if you want it to.(maybe 65) just leaving it in drive. the only time i manually shift it is to keep the revs up when im bombing twisty backroads.

Sure, manually shifting makes a difference. Does second go out to 5K all the time?

If you're doing 65 in 3rd, instead of 4th, it doesn't have to downshift and you can accelerate that much quicker to catch the KJ that is trying to pass you.

Simply put, you control when it's going to shift or if it's going to bounce off the rev limiter.

are we talking about from a standing start or whilst rolling? as i said, 2nd will pull hard up to 65 at least when in full auto, and thats about where you get out of your power band. (im assuming a stock height tire (26.5-28in) and 3.55 gears)

i think 60 or below, when you floor it it will downshift to 2nd and hold to 65 or 70. above 60 and it will only downshift to third. im not saying manually shifting isnt better, just not always neccisary.

So you're mad that a KJ few past you going 60 while your stopped and you couldn't catch him? Ummm man, that don't mean jack.

its has a 130 k miles auto
I know that there is huge engine ware but I do good vs other cars
but vs the KJ it felt like a porsche and I ve been in 2nd gear ( good gear on the XJ matches the torque very good)
I think this has to do with the HP curve of the V6 vs l-6 configuration

You go to CC? Ill believe that there. (Some people have too much money to buy their kids cars) At Mines, the XJ crowd definately has the numbers.

Nah... still in HS... But I won't lie. I live in the "rich" community of District 38, unfortunately. There are certainly a great amount of XJs in the parking lot... but almost every day, I see a new limited KJ, and I think, what a waste. Not because I dislike them greatly (they're so-so), but because I know mommy and daddy bought it, and for what? So miss priss can total it the week later? lol, I have a very low opinion of people who have been given everything on a silver platter, like most that go to Lewis-Palmer.

Having both a XJ and a KJ at my house, I'll tell you my experiences.

The 4.0 definately is a better choice with the power to torque to weight ratio. The 3.7 in the KJ is a tad underpowered for the weight of the vehicle (that IFS really does make a big difference in the weight and overall handleing). However, the 4.0 is geared with alot of its torque on low end, where as the KJ is geared to have more of its torque more towards the top end.

Another thing you didnt mention is are both Jeeps 4x4 models? Thats a good 500lbs or so of extra weight there.

One more thing to consider is the age difference and wear and tear difference. Your XJ is 10 years old, where as the KJ is 4 years old at max. ALOT less wear and tear on the KJ than the XJ.

And on a slightly different subject, Alot of people don't give the KJ the credit it deserves. Yeah its got the whole IFS thing and no 4.0, but it most certainly can hold its own. You'd be surprised at what a KJ can do offroad.

Personally though I'd take my XJ over the KJ. The low end torque just isnt there on the 3.7, and its hard to beat something thats been around for more than 20 years.

both are 4wd
You should visit Egypt egyptians are jeep fanatics you ll be amazed of the number of XJ & KJs here I visited the States and Canada several times and I can tell you can see a jeep here 10 times more often. TJL ,XJ, KJ are assembeled here since 1992 a KJ will cost you the same as C class mercedes(taxes on engine capacities). I visited the factory several times each time I m told that the XJ is 10 times better than the new liberty and this is coming out of a cheif engineer. I d choose an XJ every time I m even thinking of buying 2002 XJ for my sister which costs even more than a 2002 Liberty unfortunaly people here appreciate the value of an XJ.

I honestly tried, we ran the standard 101 course first year, had to redesign it [move rocks] for the KJ. Started taking KJ's on the basic trails at paragon, had to spend too much time hauling them off rocks, got to a point the guides started carrying floor jacks, had to again start moving rocks. If they ever get rid of those mother honking lower arms I might reconsider...

The only reason the KJ got front IFS was to please the most likely buyers of this vehicle i.e. the "soccer mom" crowd.
The 3.7 is definitely a tad underpowered (only the 5-speed KJ Sport feels remotely quick) and the 2.4 was just plain hopeless, which is why DC has smartly decided to drop the 2.4 KJ like a hot potato. The only remaining models are powered by either the 3.7 V6 petrol or the 2.8 common-rail turbodiesel.
