XJ head swap from JK

I have the dreaded 0331 head.
I am about to grab a 2003 (new version of 0331 head) from a salvage yard and take it to the local machine shop and have it cleaned/gone through.

Question: Is this head a DIRECT SWAP? I have heard of having to move the temp sensor to a different port because it will not fit.

I HAVE searched but I cannot find CLEAR answers to this issue. I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport and the JK is a 2003 model. Is this a direct swap or not?

ANY and ALL help will be appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

Well...if it's a 2003 it's not a JK it's a TJ.

And if it's JK it's not a 2003.

IIRC, the temp sensor is in the t-stat housing. Not the head on later models. Should be plug n pray tho.

And if it is a JK it doesn't have a 4.0L IIRC also.
For 2003 it could be a TJ/LJ, which have the same drivetrain components pretty much.

Sorry.
I was at work and very busy when I made the post.
The NEWer head is from a 2005 (not 2003) Wrangler with a 4.0.

I do not know wranglers at all. Sorry for the incorrect designation.

SO...the Cherokee is a 2000 model and the Wrangler is a 2005.

Direct swap?

Thanks,

JG

BTW....I have the salvage yard on standby right now waiting for me to pay for the head.

Since my XJ is SCREWED.....I would like to purchase this head NOW if it is the right one. Anyone else?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR EXPERTISE!!!!!!

I can help you with one questio. IIRC = "If I remember correctly".

As far as the head, from what I have read it is a replacement, but couldn't say from first hand knowledge.

According to a local authority; they should even be the same casting numbers...

In the first post, the OP verified the "new" head also has the dreaded 0331 casting number.

I am running a 0331 head from a 2005 Wrangler on my 2000 XJ for the same reason as the OP. No problem, just bolt it on!

they fixed the issue with the 0331 head after 2000 I believe

Fixed in LATE 2002. Anything 4.0, up to 2005, SHOULD be the same head. With SHOULD being the key word.....

That is what my research indicated. But I am glad that someone here has actually DONE the swap. Very helpful.

Thanks again.

Head is here. Had to use a wire brush and paint thinner to rub off the paint from the casting number....but my replacement is 0331. And it says TUPY under the oil cap.
So YAY!
Dropping head off at machine shop on Monday. They are going to go over it, clean it, replace seals, and other work if necessary.

Junking my 2000 0331 head.

I will try to remember to post up after engine work.

THANKS AGAIN.

I did not feel comfortable ordering this head. The guy at the salvage yard was like "Our system does NOT show this head being a replacement for your Jeep. Etc." But I figured if the casting number was the same then it must be the EXACT same head. Thanks for giving me the confidence to order the part.
