XJ Critical Path from IRO

i'd just like to clear the air a tad bit here. i helped bosco install his kit, or rather he helped me.

but right out of the box i like to pick at things and try to find flaws. i told him right away i didn't like tapping into the unibody because its so thin. luck had it that he had bought either the wrong tap or they gave him the wrong bolts in the kit so a store run was in order anyway.

i had him buy a hole saw and some grade 8 bolts and we drilled through and put a nut on the inside. far stronger than just tapping into the "frame"

yes it does see a lot more stress than a standard t-case crossmember but having a full nut and bolt in there tightened down really makes a big strength difference.

the kit i don't really see fault in for the weekend warrior, but the installation instructions on the other hand... i dont like any kit that tells you to drill and tap into the uni body. luckily we were in a position to get around it.

edit: and i've still got some connections at the polyurethane place i worked at... if you REALLLY want some 6 inch poly blocks i'm sure i can oblige :D :D

edit #2: and hadfield, any guy that can wheel a 5spd is ok in my book!

Just to add in here I'm building a crossmember for our other xj and I plan on backwelding nuts to the frame stiffeners and using six bolts per side.... four of which will be large grade 8 pieces this should be sufficient in spreading the load over a series of bolts as well as the stronger frame stiffeners structure I'm not going to put my true is just the three existing ceossmember bolts

Well thanks for the advice there Miss Manners.
I do my best. If you follow my advice, you too can become a beacon of knowledge and wisdom, even if you don't actually know anything about fabbing (like me!).

Ah, see, if your welds were prettier, you wouldn't have been embarassed by your flop. You would've been proud to show your handiwork. But that could to increased flopping, and nobody wants that.

My friend, bashing is mean. Banter is fun and jovial. I know at least on my end I am being fun and jovial. And I am adding to this thread. Every post I make is one more post in the thread!

And what's with the clowns remark? Yes, I do have big feet, but I assure you they are in keeping with my size. Plus, they've shrunk from their max size. I used to wear a 15 until I went to boot camp!

Maybe I just prefer to be generally cranky.

Seriously? Can you clowns get a room or something? I don't mind a little banter, but this is senseless bashing and adding basically nothing to the thread at this point.

Wait one more added. I agree I am also being jovial OK maybo not jovial, but definately banterous.

He must have issues. You know what they say about big feet.

Big shoes.

Has anyone noticed some threads turn into a pissing contest?

if you're going to be down there welding anyways, don't forget to use hadfield's idea for taking the shear line pressure off of the bolts.

weld a peice of 3/8 solid square stock or something you feel strong enough, at the front and back of the crossmember so that if you hit hard with your front end the crossmember will be pushed into that block that is welded on instead of putting lateral pressure on the bolts.

funny thread...

i made my own, using 4 1/2" bolts through the side, and 1 underneath, and i had frame stiffeners. crossmember itself was made entirely out of 1/4"

not the prettiest, but i tied the klunes mounting foot to it, and it was strong enough to support the weight of the jeep (a few times, didnt even dent it). I had RK long arms, so no need to tie them off of the crossmember.

price of channel steel was like 80 bux, the 2 ends were like 20, only took me a weekend to throw it together. that could be an option for u.

5 speed? You mention a Klune. Any more pictures of it in there? How do you like it? Is the 231 behind it?

Looks like an AW4 pan in front of the crossmember, and I spy a pair of tranny cooler lines and a dipstick tube.

Yea true... I saw what looks like a 5 speed shifeter on the top that is why I asked.
