I didnt total it, but i locked my brakes up in the 198 in visalia coming home from the academy and slammed into a silverado. the guard thing on the bumper took most of the impact, caving in. and now she shteers to the right and... my brakes were completely gone. upgraded to premium rotors and pads... but if i was going any faster, i could have been dead!
any one know of a front bumper for sale anywhere??? custom fab'd?

sorry ricky.

Hope its just an alignment, but have an insurance adjuster look to see if there is any structural damage. Maybe you'll get enough money out of the claim to buy a cow killer bumper.

Ouch...That sucks.

Brings up a question about how or if air bags work W/ aftermarket bumper. My guess is the do not. Also do you need to disconect or remove "stuff"

Sorry for the hyjack.

ya know... I was worried about the air bags too, but they never went off... so i was curious to what would happen if i had a big off road bumper. I know for a fact the uni-frame would get tweaked.
Here's some pictures:

by the scratches on the bumper of the other car in the driveway looks like your used to crashing.....:D

lol the other car belongs to my grandparents who state, "the red poles are chasing us everywhere we go!"
their new f-150 has the same hash marks on the same side...
this is my 1st accident in 5 years! but my bags didnt go off... is that normal?

doesnt look like it hard hard enough for the airbags to go off.
i had my permit and i was driving on the road next to where they have the goodguys show in pleasanton, and got rear ended really hard by an expedition. it pushed my rear bumper in so far it was even with the rear lift gate. and his expeditions front bumber was puched all the way into his tire so he couldnt drive off. had to get it towed and his airbags didnt go off

The newer airbags are designed so that they will not deploy unless the multiple sensors in the front are impacted within miliseconds of each other, and at a great enough force. This keeps the airbags from deploying prematurely, allowing the driver to maintain control rather than having an airbag in their face. Besides I have seen in many cases where the airbags deployed in minor traffic collision, where the should not have been injury, and the airbags cause burns, broken noses, broken teeth, or abrasions. High speed collisions is where the airbags work best. Which academy are you going to, you may want to let your RTO know about this if you are at COS or FCC.

Sorry for the hyjack.

There are no sensors in/behind/etc. the bumper. There is a device inside the XJ (I beileive under the console) that measure de-acceleration that triggers the airbag.

So aftermarket bumpers have no affect on the airbag.

I was at COS but yesterday I failed a retest on LD 40 so I am no longer there... I was on my 13th week too. I'm VERY dissapointed about my test... time to move on. Know any departs that are hiring a level 3 reserve? I'll be coming back in Sepember to start off in Module 2... Again.

That answers one of those questions lurking aroung in the back of my mind.
Could you answer another Qustion? "Whats the meaning of life"? :twak:

DaJudge is right about the airbag sensor, it is inside the XJ's. You may want to get on Jeep's website to see if you have a recall for the sensor. I have a '99 XJ and had to bring it in, they relocated the sensor from the under the console to under the driver's seat. It was free and only took them about an hour to do. I rearended a crown victoria on 101 last May and pushed everything into the radiator and my airbags didn't go off either. I have since replaced my "bumper" tin with a Hansen rock pusher. I still have the old 'new' one, if it'll fit yours shoot me an offer and come get it, I'm on the peninsula.
