Wrangler

So, of course I'm keeping my 3 Cherokees but it's time I get the Wrangler I've wanted since I was 16.

Ultimately, I don't know much about them. I assume they go along the same lines as a Cherokee.

The main guidelines I have for buying a Wrangler:

Must be 4.0 and manual.
I'd like a hard top but not that important.
Must be in decent shape and drive well. I want to be able drive this thing on a road trip.
It can be stock or modified but must be done tastefully. I don't want someones old ghetto trail rig. I'd prefer stock. I'll modify how I see fit.

Once I modify it I'd like some nice aluminum wheels, some 31 or 33 inch ATs, a couple inches of lift and maybe a front and rear bumper, a winch and some lights. So that's what I'm looking for in an already modified rig. I'd like to be able to do some mild wheeling but I won't be beating on it. I won't something that actually looks nice.

I like the updated interior of a TJ. I like the small exterior changes of a TJ. Most of all I like that there's no leaf springs sticking out from under the front bumper.
I want a fuel injected engine. I've had my fair share of carbs and don't plan to deal with them again.

Price: I have 5k to spend on this. I know that within that price range I can find a bone stock 97-99 TJ. Or I can find a mildly modified YJ.

It amazes me that someone thinks that a stock 88 YJ is worth the same as a Stock 98 TJ. They sell between 4500 and 6000 bucks. All of them, no matter what year.

Now, my question is which year do YOU prefer within my guidelines.
Are any of these years known for issues? Is there a year that I should stay away from? What do you think I should buy? and finally. Do you have one you'd like to sell me? :)

I'd like to get a wrangler. I prefer the tjs also personally. I know the last year (s) they had a 4.0 w a 6 spd manual I think. That seems like a good one with the second overdrive. Also the last years if the online 6 have all the issues sorted and the head that doesn't crack like the 0331. Personally I'd consider trading the xj off for a tj unlimited with a manual. Doubtful but it'd be nice.

You didn't read the first line did you? :) The Wrangler will be for the family to ride around in and enjoy the weather.

My 93 Trail Rig
My 93 DD
My wifes 98 DD
Then the TJ for all of us.

Basically, I'm getting rid of the 02 Liberty, the 95 Exploder and the 85 Bronco and buying a TJ.

hahaha no speaka englay. im from dallas, cant read, hahahah

dang you have to many cars. all i have is my 98 xj trail rig, 97 ram 3500, 99 xj thats just a moveable sorage unit, haha plus a trailer.

I know that TJ's came with the AX15 until 2000, but the NV3550 is basically the same transmission with a Chrysler (Daimler) model number. So there's no real upside there. '99 the tank became standard, 19 gallons, but I think that just means that the 4 cylinders got the same size tank as the 6 cylinders.

The 00-01 TJ's had a ton of cylinder head problems. My last boss bought an '01 figuring it was just a gauge or sender problem and ended up putting a used engine in it when he couldn't figure it out.

Because the new model of anything needs a couple years to work itself out, I would stay away from the '97 and try to find as new a TJ as your budget would allow. YJ's are CJ's with fuel injection. The don't ride great, so if you're looking for something to throw the family in and go to the movies, I think you've already made your decision there.

I was going to copy and paste, but it's a lot: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/stock-tj-specifications-452871/

Nice link! Thanks.

So, I'm looking for a 97-00 Sport or Sahara.

That's what comes with a 4.0 I'll probably just end up saving a few more bucks. Then find me one. I see nice ones for 6 grand. Decent ones for 5.

Good luck just because its a wrangler people think its made of gold.... I was just looking at knoxville cl and saw a 4cyl yj for 10k..... Whatever they are smoking I want some too.....

Personally I'm a yj guy..... They're like a blank canvas, and the super nerd within really wants to drive this around every day

Yeah! Exactly! I've noticed that. It's just like a Toyota Hilux Truck. Buddy of mine listed a single cab 90 4wd 4cyl Toyota pickup that was banged up pretty good. He sold it in 2 days for FOUR grand! The engine was knocking like hell! Why do people think these things are worth so damn much!

97 TJ's had the AC in weird spot. made it a real pita to get the spark plugs out.
I had a 97 Sahara.
In 98 and up they changed the bracket.
I know in 03 they changed a lot of things..
Don't get an automatic unless you plan on getting new gears soon.

get a Rubicon!

The nice thing about a YJ is it's basically a CJ with a different front end and fuel injection. You can do a CJ front clip and dash.

But people think their YJ is worth the same as a TJ, so I'd rather have links and coils and A/C.

get a tj....

97 isnt a bad year at all dads had his for a while.

deff look for a 4.0 and a 5spd. we ended up throwing the ax-15 in his and putting an aw4 out of a 99 xj in it and it drives SO much better!

For what it's worth, I had a 1990 XJ mildly built, (4 1/2"/33s) with over 200k miles and let it go.

Purchased a 2004 TJ, built it, (6 1/2"/35s), thinking this was what I really wanted - only to discover that the XJ had grown on me - I really enjoyed the Cherokee so much more! Moreso, that I sold the TJ and purchased a low-mileage, (20k), 2001 XJ to begin building next year, which will include the Novak 5.7 engine exchange...
