Would you trade your XJ for a YJ?

I have a 98 XJ that is in really good condition.
Mods
6 inch lift
32 (25% tread)
170k miles
40k on the engine
It has never been wheeled but was eventually going to be a offroad only Jeep. 90% rust free.

I was offered a trade for a 1993 YJ. Its in OK condition. The only rust is around the window frame and a little behind the seat...the seat will be a easy fix but it needs a new window frame. It has been wheeled before so its dirty but not real beat up. Its more of a mud toy then a crawler.
Mods
350 Engine headers, mild cam, push pull radiator fans. 4 core rad.
4 speed
4 link
15 bolt rear end
44 front - broke U joint in the axle.
40s (25% tread)
Locked all around

The guy is looking for a better DD then a offroad toy, im looking for more of a offroad toy.

Seems like a good deal? Mine is nicer but the YJ has a lot more offroad potential.

trade him plus 1000$ cash on his end then sell the yj to build a bigger and better xj. YJs always pull more money than xjs in the used car market. complain about the tires being worn out and the broken ujoint and say you're going to need some cash on his end since yours is basically all brand new.

I would trade but not with those conditions, much older YJ with worn tires. The cost of new tires is setting you way back right off the start. Trade plus cash to make that deal worth it to me.

No way in hell, the open top Jeeps are pretty much useless to me. I'd trade mine for a "250/2500" or heavier pickup, van, or even another hatchback sedan long before trading it on a CJ, YJ, TJ, or JK.

i would never buy someone elses built up rig unless i know the history behind it

Agree, I would never buy somebody else's build especially if it's broke. You don't know how he wheeled it or basically anything about the build. Trading your nice built XJ for a broken down POS...that's fail. Plus the square headlights on a Wrangler are ugly as hell. They belong on an XJ.

Im going to at least go look at it soon. I want more of a trail rig since i already have 2 other vehicles I DD.

If its a raging POS then its not deal, but if its in good shape mechnical wise I may have to do it.

I actually think they look pretty good with the square headlights

40's on a 44 front is retarded by the way.

that would make me question the rest of the build

YJ frames rot. a bunch.

While I agree depending on how the axle is built it might not be terrible. We ran a D44 with 42s on it for a while with no issues....of course that was just trail riding.

I dont think they built it. I think he bought it this way and has fixed some of the issues it had. Sounds like the wiring was a mess when he bought it.m So im more questioning the person that had it before.

Its suppose to be solid....well see.
I've seen what indiana Winters do to a Yota Frame, Can't imagine a YJ would be much better.

I will once I go see it. Right now I just have some cell phone pics that are a little fuzzy. Its really hard to tell in them. My Jeep looks brand new on the cell phone pics lol

I understand the frames rote out on them. But the Floorboards, rockers and hatch also do on the XJ. Which mine are in great shape so I hope to get the same in return.

I do notice it seems stretched. Its 4 linked and looking at other YJ 4 link builds they replace the rear frame section. So if they did it right I could see that being pretty new.

Anything I should look for?

The reason im wanting to trade is because I want a offroad toy. If I was wanting a DD I would keep the XJ, but im trying to keep up with a truck with 42s and lots of flex. The XJ don't stand a chance unless I want to destroy it.
