Wiring an XJ for trailer brakes

I tried searching and didn't come up with the answer if it was covered in the past could some one link me to it. I have a '99xj that i need to put a trailer brake controler in. It didn't come with the factory towing package. Which wire should i tie into under the dash to signal the controler that the brakes are beinging applied? I know how to hook everything else up i'm just not sure which wire to go to. Is there a harness i can buy from jeep or am i on my own? I'd like the install to be clean.

Thanks,

OK.. I'm too tired to look but if you play with the keywords you will come up with couple threads...

In any case:
what kind of a brake controller? Each might have it's quirks in a setup, but in general one wire goes from the brake pedal switch to the controller. THen you get ground and + to the controller and feed one wire out to the rear. This wire might actually already be there for you (pop the left side panel underneath the dash and I think there might be a blue or green wire already laying there for you, and it might even be tagged: brake or something like that).

Next you have to run + from the front to the rear 7 pin connector. Now.... pop your rear hatch open, and open up the drivers rear panel in the hatch. In there you will see a connector that goes to the lights. This is a place where you plug in the T connector that you can get from Kragen/Autozone/NAPA type place. This will give you 4 wires from which I don't think you're using one of them (I think it's brake light one you're disregarding... look into the wiring instructions from the brake controller again).
Now you got that single line from the brake controller, 12V+, ground, blinker R, blinker L and I know I'm forgetting one more....

Btw, the center pin in the 7 pin harness is ussually unused: it's for optional backup lights or optional additional 12V+.

Oh... and my controller called for actual 12V- and 12V+ for it instead of 12V+ and ground, again it varies by application.

It's a teshonkea voyager, it's off my truck. The xj is wired for flat 4 and i have a connector to tap the flat 4 into a round 6 for my trailer. Any idea where to tap into the brake switch wire and what color it is?

Yeah... under the brake pedal :D and as to which color it was, I don't remember. Either look at the FSM or go under theere with a multimeter or test light and see which wire lights up when you press down on the pedal: You can get the wire probe into the connector from behind.
