Why not to get an ARB bumper

For background, I live, work, and Play in Houston, Texas. The 2000 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) that I purchaced the the BullBar for is not extensivly modified, nor has ever been any any off road competition. I have owned the jeep fore the last 16K miles, and the BullBar for the last 15K. The BullBar is just about a year old. The Jeep is a daily driver, and my sole mode of transportation except for the two good legs that god gave me.

0) the product has an overall bad design, offering little to no function.

1)600 product + 150 shipping = enough money to buy a nice MIG setup.

2) The BullBar has a low ground clearance, with the lower contact edge lacking any reinforcement. The construction in this manner does not allow for safe use of a Hi-Lift jack directly to the bumper.

3) The Bar provides for a winch mount that is accessible from the bottom of the bumper.
Where is the logic? This is supposed to be a HEAVYDUTY bumper. The protection should be toward the surface that the vehicle travels upon, and NOT up toward the sky protecting the vehicle from flying insects.

4) The lack of protection from below accelerates weathering and decomposition to a winch. The recommended Warn winch quickly loses its coating under the abusive conditions. It is the first part of the Jeep to be submerged in mud. The winch slowly gets filled with dirt, thus wearing the winches gears unnecessarily. Also, the LACK OF PROTECTION FROM BELOW leave the winch exposed to crippling hazards on the trail.

5) The bar provides no protection for the winch Fairlead. The upper “lip” that retains the 2 long bolts retaining the vertical rollers easily becomes bent inward. This condition pinches the roller, hindering or preventing any rolling. The roller is then destroyed when load is placed upon it, as the wire rope becomes a saw under the loaded operation.

My conclusion is that the ARB Bullbar is an over advertised, over rated, over priced, badly designed product destine to become a twisted heap of metal owned by whoever dare test it in any moderate or harsh off road use. I personally would not recommend the BullBar to any person, anywhere. Additionally, if the BullBar lives up to its name so poorly, how could any person ever consider purchasing any other ARB product, especially Air Lockers?

Everyone is entitled to thier opinon.

Let me just say this.....

I have had the ARB bar, and lockers for about 8 years, the last 4 with a Milemarker winch. I have banged, beaten, winched, and strapped to it with no problems. The lockers have been trouble free, except for upgrading the solinoids to the new style.

IMHO...ARB is very quality equipment.

Considering you really don't like it, I'll be happy to give you 100.00 for it.

:D :D

Do you have a winch in it? Do you take the vehicle offroad? I have had my Bull Bar for over three years with the Warn 9000 winch. The unit is very well built, the winch is very well protected, it rides low to help with center of gravity and helps with cooling the engine (does not block the radiator). I have high-lifted off every corner of it with no problems and have been on the hardest trails around in the west, Johnson Valley (The Hammers) the Rubicon ect. with no problems. I'll give you $50.00 for yours as a spare. Oh yea, I also have a front ARB locker, it works bitchen.

I don't want to get to into this subject as I don't own a arb bumper or anything arb for that fact. However I have seen an ARB bumper front mashed pretty badly on a cherokee. If I find the pictures I might post them up. Either way 2 people saying their bad out of almost 100 I have seen on cherokees isn't bad. I however will buy BPI fab for about 400!:D

I have to counter... I had an ARB bull bar on my rig for a few years and it held up very well..... Including a trip to Moab which the bumper mashed a good few rocks and then an almost head on collision with a tahoe which totalled the tahoe. Yes there are some bumpers that are better/nicer out there for less $$ but IMHO it is a very sturdy functional piece of hardware.

Yes I have a winch and yes I take it off road and yes it is bent in several places along with other things.

The winch mounted accordingly for loading purposes just as a class3 tow hitch. Nevertheless, it is still exposed from benith.

Additionaly, air restriction reduction is not the best.
1) the selinoid mount is smack dab in the center of the radatior.
2)Strap some lights to the mounting brackets. Then see how much air restriction you have.
3) The selenoid complety covers the small window over the winch spool, restricting view of the spool complety.

Yes, the selenoid can be relocated, but it is still an issue.

Just to be fair:
It has saved my front end more than once, and stood up to quite a beating...the beating hasn't stoped.

I'm not sure if it is good to have a bumper that is significantly stronger that the vehicle. The bumper is in fact supposed to be a bit of a sacrificial part ....think head on collisions.

ARB is also taking my complaints very respectivly.

IMHO
just a discussion...

arb bumpers are one of the few bumpers that are actually tested and certified as airbag compatible... i love mine.. wouldnt trade it for anything else

Hi guys. I am new to the forum and I just sayin hi. Also, I just installed an arb bull bar 2 days ago and I have 6 inch 150 watt kc's on the lower light brackets, and I don't have a winch yet, but I do have 2 hella 500 series lights in where the fairlead would go and I have no problem with engine temps. I live in Orlando and it gets plenty hot here. I bought it off a friend who is selling his xj for a tj and he had no problems with it. I like the look and when we used it on my friend's jeep, it worked like a rock. In my opinion, yes, it is high priced, but, it is worth it i believe.

I have had my ARB for 2 years now and have been more than happy with it, as for those who say its not that strong I dissagree because not only have I wheeled it and smacked it off of all kinds of things and it held up good but I also rear ended and really badly messed up a ford tempo with mine and the only real damage was some red paint left on my bumper.
