who makes a good distributor

I don't know if the innards are interchangeable. Things you would need to check: shaft dimension, oil pump drive, gear size and tooth count, cam rotor, pickup coil sensor, distributor rotor. If all that matches up then sure, I guess you could put a 6 cyl cap on the distributor.

I got my hands on a 2.5L distributor. The 2.5L gear has the same number of splines but its offset differently, as shown in pictures earlier in this thread by another poster. The offset makes it impossible to install properly. I spent considerable time trying and someone else looked at it who couldn't make it work either. The drive gear is offset so it can only be installed one way. I changed the drive gear to my factory 4.0L gear and it dropped right in. For many, the bushings may be worn causing slop. These bushings can be pressed out with good replacements pressed in. I had thought a 2.5L distributor may work without modification because Cardone only lists one distributor body for 2.5L/4.0L; the 2.5L/4.0L has a part number split when you get one with a cap and rotor.
