AX5. The Peugeot was only used from 1987 to late 1989, behind the 4.0. You're already invalidated because your XJ predates the I6 they used - but the AMC I4 is also a good engine - there are quite a few who swap the GM 2.8L V6-60 out for it.

the 2.5 has slightly more horsepower, slightly less torque, and is more reliable. I have a 2.8 that has a rod knocking, saving up some dough for the 3.4L replacement!
Just noticed the leak on the bell housing tonight, so it looks like I will get a initiation into AX-5 Clutch work!
