I've read some different opinions on what diagnostic tool I need to pull codes and the price ranges vary. What does everyone recommend on a budget?

I just posted some update comments on AutoEnginuity scanner issue above. Not sure how to bring it into your question. Maybe check with the folks at http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/, They have a good selection, though not the really cheap stuff, and I thought their advice to me was useful in choosing a scanner.

If you're on a budget, you'll want a code reader. Scan tools are more expensive but they can do a lot more than a basic code reader.

I've had very good luck with EQUUS products. They make very reasonable code readers at a decent price....SEARCH the web and you'll find their stuff everywhere.

Even Walmart carries a basic ODB2 code reader.

You can get an Actron CP9175 scanner on Amazon.com for $97. It is OBDII only, but that is fine for 96+ vehicles.

Code readers are just that, and most don't allow you to reset codes, but you can always keep disconnecting the battery to do that.

And?
They don't do their scan service in CA?
New Law for 2010
Parts stores in CA and HI aren't allowed to scan or rent code readers.
It's suspected that people were trying to pass smog buy clearing the codes. How stupid is that..you've still got to fix the problem
I can't wait until our illustrious "acting" Governor is booted out...

where in ca are you? i bought a otc scanner off the snapon truck at work. if your local to me we could meet up and i can read the codes for you.

I have the Actron one too, don't know the part # but it's the palm size one. Costs like $60 or so at any auto parts chain store, Autozone, Advance auto, Pep Boys, Strauss. It does let you reset codes.
