which muffler ?

ive got a 93 4.0 currently with a flowmaster on it and duals from muffler back. While it sounds good with the flowmaster I really need something quieter as this is used for a hunting rig.
Before I go back with a stock type muffler does anyone have any suggestions on something quieter with good flow ?
 
agreed. seen a few dyno tests online that repeatedly show the super turbo outflowing the flowmaster by a reasonable amount. pretty quiet with a very slight "burble" at idle.
 
I would go with a 22-26" Magnaflow or buller performance muffler.
 
flowmaster or any straight thru muffler. If ur packing a 500hp to 1000hp motor then flow has 10hp effect on the motor depending on muffler choice. Dont listen to these people that say this muffler flows better then this one. Straight thru is the best, flowmaster has chambers which create backpressure. Its not straight threw so people think it doesnt flow as well. If u have a graph thats fine. Flowmasters sound the best. Like i said if ur pumping the horses out then the "flow" matters. Ur prolly putting down 140hp to the wheels in a stock 4.0. U put a flowmaster or the other mufflers that are straight threw um sure it will differ by a horse or two. that 1 or 2hp aint gunna help ya up a hill or over a rock better; Which the butt dyno doesnt feel it anyway so its up to sound.

1. Flowmasters sound like trash, I will take a glasspack over a flowmaster.
2. There are 4 or five dyno tests out there done by both CHP and Mustand World that all say flowmasters do not flow for crap. Mustang world's test was done on a stock mustang 4.6. The test on CHP was done soley on flow rate as hooked to a machine, so the only effect the baffles have on the test is that they do in fact reduce flow.
3. You say strait through is the best, followed by flowmasters being the best. Pick one.

The OP has a flowmaster currently, he wants something quieter. Hense the need for something that is not a flowmaster. He also mentioned flow as a priority after sound level.

You got it.... quieter is the key here. Looks like im going to be putting a stock one back on it for now.
 
how much will a stock muffler run you in your area? Most of the parts stores have a house brand super turbo style muffler for 30-40 bucks. I think That is about what i paid for a dynomax.
 
Stockers are spendy, a super turbo or a summit/jegs house brand (basically same as super turbo, will be cheaper/better than stocker or flow.
 
the test were done on a mustang if u seen it at mustang world. 5.0l with a bunch of boltons doesnt compare to a 140hp motor. So its a sound decision. If everyone new flowmaster mufflers didnt flow as well as others why are they still in business? I curently dont have a flowmaster on my jeep. But i would consider it when i redo the catback compared to others. You want something quieter then why even modify ur exhaust? Aftermarket performance mufflers are loud. Unless u dont gut ur cat or u add a resonator to ur existing setup.
 
not all are loud, and certainly not all are obnoxious either. If you want to run one on your junk thats fine, it is your decision. Personally I think there are better setups, especially for your V8.

And they are still in business because they have an excellent marketing department and the hype is great, and because not everyone knows that they do not flow as well. Their name even says it right? For the kid with a new car looking for noise and a sticker, flowmaster has their name in solid. For the enthusiasts that have done a little research, not so much, for the people who do a lot a research, not at all. I consider it amazing considering their price is higher than the competitors, that they sell as much as they do. More kids want Nikes over walmart shoes for the same reason.

I think one of the 5.0 tests was with some bolt ons, but nothing crazy. I have seen the same test with a stock 4.6, and CHP did one using just a flow meter hooked to the muffler, I assume shop air into a plenum to supply the muffler, I do not recall their exact setup, but when I read it it seemed reasonable to me.

TK put down the key board and think. The OP wants not Flowmaster, quieter, and better flow than the current Flowmaster. You may love Flowmaster, that's fine, calm down. And remember, we are on an XJ site. We tend to refer to our Jeeps as junk. Don't take it so personally.
