the state park website is ok for the bigger ones, but anyone got a tip on finding smaller places to tent camp?
Maybe something not crawling with people? Does that exist in CO or do I have to go home to MT to find that? :)

Figured you guys would know if anyone did, I'm still pretty new to the state and don't get out much.

What area? and time of year?

spring/summer, relatively close to denver but I'll probably have to drive a bit to get away from the crowds. I'd really like something with lake fishing nearby I guess.
I just don't know any of the places around the state yet.

one rule of thumb is no camping on private property and as far as FS or BLM as long as your not with in 50 feet from a road trail or river/stream or water source your good to go.
The smaller camp sites your talking about your not going to find on maps really or they would be used up for sure all the time. Just one of those get out and drive walk around one weekend scout out a bunch of ares in you neck of the woods that you like to camp in and go for it.

There is a place called BUNCE SCHOOL DISTRICT and it is a pretty good place to camp. I have always found a spot that was away from people although on the main trails there are alot of traffic with 4 x 4's and atv's and it is only a hop skip and a jump from lily lake up by Estes park and then you have Estes lake. Bunce is actually kinda a back way to get into camp Dick which in turn is the trail head for Middle St. Vrain 4 x 4 trail. From Denver just go north on I-25 until you get to Hwy 66 the turn left and go West for about 15 miles until you get in to Lyons Co. Once you drive all the way through town you will come to a Tee that you have to go left or right, go left on Hwy 7, follow 7 all the way up until you see Jct Hwy 72 do not turn left there but pass it up just a little ways and keep an eye out for a stop sign and dirt road on yor left which is bunce school road, turn left there and explore. Also one of our favorites is Rollinsville. just google that one and you can get a map. Rollinsville is actully endless with camping and fishing. If you go up rollins pass once you get to the top you will find Yankee Doodle Lake which is some sweet fishing for trout. We drove all day once up in Rollinsville and never crossed the same trail twice....it's sweet!!!! Its just right outside of Nederland and Nederland itself has a giante Resivoir that is good fishing too!
