Wheeling north of Amarillo?

I pass through Amarillo on my way to Colorado, and every year I see Jeeps and 4x4s playing around North of Amarillo on Hwy 87.

The Location is at 35° 28' 4.16" N 101° 52' 48.67" W.

Does anyone have any information on this location? Is it legal to wheel there? Is it public or private land?

You have to have an ORV sticker on you vehicle, or you will get a ticket. It is the only river in Texas that it is legal to drive in.

It is called Canadian River. It does have some challegening stuff for any type of wheeling. Besides that its FREE.

info on getting a sticker?

Some key points from the FAQ:

Do I need a Texas OHV decal when trail riding on private lands?
No, unless the land was purchased for use as an OHV park or at an existing OHV venue that made facility improvements using National Recreational Trails Program grant funds or Texas OHV program grant funds, i.e., TMTC’s Barnwell Mountain Recreational Area.

Will OHV decals from other states be honored in Texas?
At this time, there are no reciprocity agreements between Texas and other States which have State OHV decal programs. If a resident of another state wants to trail ride with their OHV on public lands, where OHV recreation is legal in Texas, they will be required to purchase a Texas OHV decal.

At one point, I believe the sticker ONLY applied to non-street legal rides. However, that does NOT appear to be the case anymore. In any event, that money goes directly to help fund ORV upkeep and provide money for new areas, so I suggest everyone pick one up. It's only $8 bucks a year, so it's money well spent. You can order one over the phone at 512-389-8917.

Also, related to burbon's initial question, there's a list of locations (including Canadian River) where having an OHV sticker lets you ride. It can be found at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/ohv/ride.phtml.

So from what I am reading we need that sticker to ride in barnwell too?
Thats correct. I was under the impression (based on comments by other folks at Barnwell) that the sticker was ONLY required on vehicles that were NOT registered as street vehicles. However, I can't find anything on the website that actually states that. So, I'm gonna spend the 8 bucks in a "better safe than sorry" move.

That said, Barnwell does NOT enforce the rule, but they have said that TPW WILL enforce it if they see it.

I'll see if I can get the straight dope when I call em.

Okay, found it:

Do street-legal vehicles need the OHV decal when riding at an OHV venue located on the public lands of Texas?
Yes, street legal motorcycles, street legal full-sized vehicles, full-sized 2-wheel drive vehicles, and 4-wheel drive vehicles need a Texas OHV decal when trail riding on public land. Use of street-legal OHVs on private land or on public roads does not require the Texas OHV decal.

FYI: I called and ordered my sticker. They just need basic info (make and model, name and address, credit card) then they send it out.
