Wheelin the Shawnee NF

Bounty Hunter

For anybody interested in legal IL wheelin, there is the entire Shawnee National Forest as long as you stay on legal Forest Service Roads. These level 1 and 2 roads will soon close for the winter, from the end of 2nd shotgun deer season until spring turkey season.

Here's some pics from our run down there last week:

Where's the trail head? What city, I mean?

I used to run a bunch of trails down there in Union county when I was in college. Rattlesnake ferry is pretty cool and runs right beside the big muddy river. That one starts near look-out point in the Larue hills area.

Rattlesnake Ferry is cool, been there many times. It's got a fun powerline climb and plenty of mud.

Best I've found are around Vienna. SIJA has a run down there the weekend of Nov. 5th and 6th, free popup run open to all. Check out www.sija.org/forums in the Events section.

Woody, I'm from Nokomis if you know where that's at. We used to play sports against Virden all the time.

Yes...this looks fun.

I predict a MWC informal fact-finding run next year. :D

Next year? There's a run there next weekend, see thread in unofficial runs forum. I figure since I already have the mud tires on Jen's Jeep for Superlift this weekend, why not? Maybe Redbird the weekend after?

Easy hoss, at that rate wheeling might start interfering with web-wheeling.

Busy.

Gotta look at a Shelby Cobra replica this weekend, and hunt Pheasent next, and on, and on, and on.....

I go to the SNF a lot, about 6 times a year. I do volunteer work there and am getting to know the place a bit. Rattle Snake Ferry Rd, I've seen the trail head but never driven down it. There are a bunch of wineries that are rather good in the area and as far as camping all you need to do is find a spot in the forest to pull into; there are hunter's camps along most of the open FS roads.

Rev, next spring after hunting season is closed, I'd be interested in doing a trip down there for scouting places to get stuck in the mud.
