What's this XJ worth? (roll over)

So my son (20y/o) comes home for a couple weeks from the navy, Borrows my fathers 92 XJ and rolls the damn thing. :doh:

We're working with my sons insurance to get as much as we can to replace the XJ for my father, but I know they're gonna offer me next to nothing and crush the darnd thing.

Only real damage is the roof, and the drivers fender is kinda flat LOL and the grill broke off. Oh, and the windshield... Doesn't look like the windshield frame has been damaged, but it's hard to tell.

I plan to take the tires/wheels, the winch, and the rear bumper (front one is welded on)

So, What we will have (going to the crusher if no one wants it)

93 XJ with a pieced together 3.5" lift
Will have little roller tires on it.
stock axles (D35 rear) stock gears, stock motor, Auto trans, 231 TC, Power everything, and it all works. The XJ actually ran real good, smokes now because it was upside down for 45 mins...
Doors, glass, everything still good.

Someone may want to hack the top and turn this into a crawler... I don't wanna. No time, and already have 2 jeeps. I'm not interested in parting it out.

I'm thinking if someone wanted to shell out some coin on this thing and it's more than the insurance wants to give, maybe I'll sell it as is... Kinda in limbo till we hear what the ins wants to offer, pretty sure they're not gonna fix it, just crush it.

Have your son cut a monthly allotment from his salary to your father so he can buy himself an excellent replacement XJ now. When the insurance is settled, your son can either apply it as payoff or keep the $$$. Pretty irresponsible with someone else's property...

Trust me... He got an ear full, and he'll feel it in the wallet.

Plan right now is to let the kids ins buy it off, and the kid ows my pop the rest, up to $3k which is what we feel the XJ was worth before it was rolled.

I'll pull tires, winch and anything else I can salvage before it goes to the crusher, sell the items and apply that to my sons debt to my father... was just wondering if there's something I was missing, another option.

It's sad to see such a good running XJ go to the chusher.

book value is irrevelant, that thing looked pretty clean prior to the roll. YOU or the kid, need to find comparable xj's for sale to back up your evaluation. 5 years ago, I bought an xj for $2900, added some craigslist 31's and budget boost. It was a 98 and had 130k on it. Drove it about 10k and totalled it. It was in clean pristine condition, I printed out comparable vehicles from trucktrader, craigslist, etc and faxed them in the the adjuster. Their first offer was $5450, minus my deductible of $500. I was so shocked, all I said was, "Sounds good to me. I thought you were gonna make me fight you for a fair price." They offered to let me keep it for $750, but I declined.

Point is, you tell them what you think it is worth, do their work for them, by providing substantiating comparables, and be prepared to defend your price if necessary.

i got roughly 4k for it, and was able to keep it for $400.

in my experience, i wouldn't do that. all it does is give them a clue of how little you're willing to take. let them throw out the first offer, generally it's pretty damn good, and they tack on a little buffer so that you go home happy instead of making more work for them.

My experience was the opposite. My offer was on an old toyota PU that had been stolen and beat up a bit and they decided to total it instead of fix it. Their offer was something silly like $1200. I had to print up a number of comparable vehicles and I ended up getting a fair settlement of something like $4000.

But it doesn't hurt to wait and see what they offer. But I'd also be looking at ads and getting a good idea of what market value is so you can determine if their offer is decent or not.

guess it depends on the company. esurance has always paid a lot in my experience.

I've totalled a "few" vehicles in my time. haha Showing them proof of similar vehicles always worked better for me. I also had one company allow me to provide receipts of maintenance and upgrades performed within last 30 days and they added that on to the payoff amount. If he's bought tires or any services....
