What was your biggest mod mistake

Back when the Rolling Stones came out with there first number one hit. My brother and I decided to raise the old Jeep, cut some pieces of flat stock to make longer shackles. Wasn´t happy with the results, decided it had to go higher, so we made a set of shakles for the other end of the spring too.:D

Drilling my cb antenna mount into the rear of my jeep.

250$ 2.5" Downpipe, its a good mod, but not for 250$

Ha deffinitely the snorkel, not that i dont use it enough, just that i coulda found a better product to spend 230 bucks on... and i wouldnt catch half the sh*t that i do from the folks around her

Supposedly the RC lift kit is bad too, but i havnt had any problems with it yet.... (knocking on wood)

Mine was not gearing low enough. I was advised to go with at least 4.56's, but nooooo I had to get 4.10's. I've regretted it since the first week I've had them. Another was getting 15x7" wheels. Get at least 15x8's.

Cutting my rear quarter panels off instead of makng a bumper that followed the body lines. Now I'm starting to get dents in the body 'cause apparently that was a structural area.

Bushwacker flares and the bajillion holes I drilled in the body and now wish I hadn't.

The rest was merely a learning process and don't regret the numerous lifts and tire combos I've had.

LMAO!!! hilarious thread.....

my first bad "mod" was buying a 10 year old jeep when i'm in university

2. spending tons of money from the student line of credit to get 3" of lift, when she needed a lot of other work to be done to her.

3. spending $800 (cdn) for rubber and not getting an alignment... 5 months later and 2 front tires are worthless!

She still needs a LOT of work but i'm thinking of going to 33's anyways.... guess i'll never learn!! :D

I myself made the jack@$$ mistake of paying one thousand dollars for a replacment 2.8 just to have it blow up 6 months later. Impatiently awaiting a different engine (definately not a 2.8). Damn I was stupid

2 words: Pro Comp
What a complete waste of money. I bought their 3" lift because it was cheap. Every bushing in the entrire kit failed to some degree. The worst was their 2.5" lift leaf springs, the front bushings slid around and the springs rubbed the frame, and the rear bushings disintegrated and were just metal on metal.

hmmmmmmmmm
i actualy dont regret much, wouldnt regret much, off the the top of my list...

36x12.50 TSL/SXs i love these tires off road, they hook up great, could mess up a sidewall as hard as i tried, but on the street is another story. they are loud, handle like shit, and arent round, but i dont mind that, i expected that, what i didnt expect is how heavy they are, with 4.88s and a 4.0L it is still slower than i can stand.

the only other thing i can think of now is the rear drumb brakes, i cant stand them, i'm finaly setting up my rear disks. i think i've spent more on brake shoes and drums that i spend on my whole disk brake setup.

oh ya, bushwaker flare, i still think they are a good idea, just not for me, got torn off by trails way too fast.

oh yea i thought of another one...

[Rant] tried to take the doors off....what a mess...whoever at DC thought it was a good idea to use torx bolts in the hinges was a fool...ended up grinding the heads off most of them to get the door off.....

then i couldn't get the hinge pin out..tried torch, drilling, etc etc...i'm sure it can be done...but after a week of trying every second of the day i got p*ssed and said forget it...

there's still more...

put the door's back on...with no shimms and not in the proper location...bent the front quarter panel on the driver side closing and opening the door.....fixed it so it doesn't rub....but now the door hangs funny and when it snows it comes in the door...so does rain and in water...forget it!!!!!!!!!! stupid doors

Paying $170 per 33x10.5 BFG Mud Terrain KM when I could have gotten MT/Rs for hell of a lot cheaper, better tire IMHO.

RS5000s - those things were horrible.

Teraflex Gen. I trackbar. Don't even go there...

Paying Tarheel 4wd to install my first lift before I knew anything. Cost me $500 for something my little brother could have done.

Rear quarter panel chop? I don't really know about this one. I like how it looks without the quarters, but now I've got to deal with the massive holes it left. No dents or otherwise weird body warping to date though. I'm still happy with it I guess...

Taking my two from doors off the HARD way. I unbolted EVERYTHING, played hell knocking out those f'king roll pins and used 1/4" hex bolts in place. Then, cut and spliced my wires instead of using my noggin and looking behind the kick panels for the damn plugs.

Open element K&N - I'd rather have my stock air box back in there. I'll probably get around to making the switch one of these days...

The snorkel, I think, tops them all. Finally took it off and sold it,now I've got a big friggin' hole in my fender where it used to be,along with the bolt holes where it was mounted.

Why?

I did a lot of research on 3" lift kits because I wanted 3" and 31" tires for my first kit. I found a place with a good deal on a Skyjacker lift and went to buy it. Once I was there, they told me "for only another $80 or so you can get an extra inch and a half". I thought that must be a bargain, so I went for it. Well, since I was getting a bigger lift I got longer Pro Comp ES3000 shocks that would fit it also. It took me over a year to try and correct everything else that was out of whack with 5" instead of 3.5" (SYE, drop pitman, death wobble, etc.)and to replace the shocks because the Pro Comp's would freeze up in the Utah winter and not move at all.

Bought a shift improver kit for a 700R4. The destructions said to drain the oil remove the tranny turn it upside down on the workbench. Figured, I´d do it in the truck. Pulled the valve body and little balls fall everywhere (in the grass). Don´t panic I´ve got the factory manual, Turned to the valve body section and found a dozen pages of differnet routing schematics and ball (check valve) positions. Good they are listed by tranny number, the numbers on my tranny didin´t match any in the book. Spent most of two days with a magnifying glass, with Dexron III dripping in my eyes, trying to match the wear marks the little balls had made in there seats. Tranny worked just fine when I got done, but I never did notice any improvement in the shifts.

What is this the IDIOT line?!? ......................................................................... well let me get in line! I got the bright idea of having a friend build me a reverse cowl to draw the heat from under the hood. Cut a rectangular hole right in the middle of the hood with a plasma cutter from underneath, and have molten metal chunks in my windshield and tears up my windshield wipers when it rains! (Luckily I live in sunny warm So. Cal) Wait I'm not finished after he soberred up realized a reverse cowl won't work to well, I now have a rivetted floor vent over the hole (I know its ghetto, but it looks a lot better then some stupid hole!!)

Funny thing is my engine runs about 5* cooler with the ventilation!! Hey at least it works!

I would say that the thing I most regret doing was buying brand new RE leaf packs and shackles to fix my sagging rear from the retarted short aal and block that comes with rough country kits only to replace that with my current 8 inch kit two weeks later because I broke the uca and smashed the rear ds. Of course now I am glad that stuff broke because if they didnt I wouldnt be at 8 inches right now.
