?? What motors will work in my 95 XJ?

Yep.

Just use the long block (head and block) from the '97 and then swap everything else off your motor to it.
You may have to do something with the water temp sensor(s). I think the OBDI HO's had 2...one in the head and one in the t-stat housing...and then the later HO's just had it in the t-stat housing...but I may have that mixed up or wrong altogether. Past that you should be good to go.

Check your current 95 head and make sure it DOES NOT have a temp sensor in the head, the 97 one does not have a spot for it IIRC. You could drill and tap it if needed though. However, with the exception of a few sensors, Im about 99% sure that it will swap right over. The intake and exhaust manifold should even be the same. The 96-99 is still considered an "HO" engine, they are just OBD2 compatible. The 99 is the best though, still has the good (as in NOT an 0331 casting) head, but also has the good equal length runner intake.

Thanks for the help guys! Willys the few sensors the 97 motor may not have...would it be best to pull them off my 95 motor or do you think it would be ok with out them?

No, you will need them. Im pretty sure you can use everything off of the 97 except for the throttle body and the MAP sensor, but even those MIGHT be the same. Those years (95-97) were kinda weird b/c Chrysler was changing stuff around for the OBD2 stuff. Basically, somewhere in there they went from a firewall mounted MAP to a throttle body mounted MAP, but Im not exactly sure what years had what. I know you will need to run the wiring harness off of your 95 as well.

Ok that was my next question...so definately use the harness and all thats already there( the 95 harness)?

No.

Use JUST the long block from the '97. Head and block only. Hell...if your head on your engine is good swap it over to the donor block as well. Then the block from the '97 is ALL you need.

Use EVERYTHING else from your '95. This will give you the least amount of headaches. Unplug all your sensors and move the wiring harness out of the way. Take off all the '95 accessories (alt, waterpump, PS pump etc) and set them aside. Pull your manifolds off.
Take EVERYTHING off the '97 except leaving the head and block. Pull your bad block out...put the '97 long block in and bolt everything from your '95 back on...sensors, accessories, etc.

If it were me I would also replace the valve cover gasket, you will for sure want to do the intake/exhaust gasket, and then do the rear main and oil pan gasket too and maybe even the motor mounts. All MUCH easier to deal with since the engine is out.

You start messing with sensors and harnesses etc and you may as well swap EVERYTHING from the '97 over...and other than the lighting and stereo stuff which may even be different...you will most likely need EVERYTHING from the '97 if you do this...a lot of the interior stuff, fuse panels, gauges etc. They are different.

Even a '94-95 harness etc is going to be different and those are both OBDI.

The 95 motor will have 2 temp sensors for sure, the t-stat housing sensor, 2 wires, feeds the computer and the one on the back of the head, 1 wire, feeds the gauge.

If it were me I would use the 95 head on the 97 block, otherwise be prepared to drill and tap or make some other provision for the temp gauge.

I would also suggest changing every gasket possible while you are at it and perhaps even go so far as to throw in a new oil pump just to be on the safe side. Basically anything that you might need to do down the road that would be much easier with the motor out.

Basically I guess I'm agreeing with and restating what 043500 said, and stay away from trying to swap the 97 harness in, unless you just hate yourself. It can be done and perhaps isn't that bad, but it's a headache that is easily avoided.

Alright sounds good...thatnks for the help. I definately would love to avoid messing with changing the harnesses. So it sounds like I will swap everything over to the new motor. I will take a look at the head and figure out what will be the easiest as far as that goes. I will keep you guys updated.

i swapped a 95 out and droped a 98 wrangler in. the power steering pumps and how it was mounted to the intake manifold was different, and same thing with the tension pully under the pump, but all the sensors excet the temp was there.
