what does 20,000# break strength mean on tow strap

I keep a 6' x 8' canvas tarp in the back. It can be used over the strap. It is handy for lots of other uses too.

In my personal experiences a tow/snatch strap at any strength WITHOUT HOOKS is better than any shackle or hook. As for the vehicle hooks have recently seen four break (in the same evening same hole). Anyway when the straps we were using all three of them had broke we had to resort to chains. Not a good nor safe idea. Basically get a good high strength snatch strap without hooks. Have never tried them but hear that the pro-comp snacth cables are good but any that has at least 2-3 times your vehicle weight with some elasticity to it. just my .02

Ah ha! I found a good article on recovery using a snatch strap. For some strange reason, you can't use the url to get to it directly, but if you do a Google search for 'snatch strap', find the citation 'WHEELS24.co.za'. Amazingly, the picture that accompanys the article is that of an XJ in the mud. The article also talks about how to connect two straps using a dowel.
