The retard in the diesel pickup needs to learn what angle to pull at, and not to jerk on chains. If they'd gotten the right angle on that and been careful, I think they could have pulled it out without removing the axle, and certainly wouldn't have dug it into the embankment trying to get it out of the mudpit. wtf.
