Want to Buy XJ

Wow. Yesterday was fun. I looked at 4 more XJ's and almost pulled the trigger on a great running, bad looking 96.
I called AAA to see what the registration fees would be........and it was a stolen vehicle. F. I handed the guy back his paperwork, and got away without incident. People always wonder why I am armed while away from home.........

The hunt continues.....Possible 1999, Red, 4000 today.

I hope you called the police to turn it in.The owner may wants his/her jeep back. These things only get around 20 MPG(if you're lucky) and people think they have GOLD, Thats just funny.Over 4 bucks a gal and they want top dollar.

Good luck with your hunt

If your willing to do some rebuild/cleanup work. My buddy is selling his 89 bone stocker. But it needs work, still runs, reg is current clean title. That's the good! Now for the bad, auto trans doesn't shift auto anymore needs new solenoids ( you have to shift it manually while driving), if it has oil in it its leaking ooil out of it! Now the good part is he has come to terms with what its actually worth. I told him to take a stab at starting his "asking" price at $1000, however I also told him its not worth $1000, it did pass smog last time tested so there shouldn't be any issue there and if you come with cash waving he will probably make a deal with you.

Just throwing it out there. It does need work, but its a running driving xj.

Oh yeah the vacuum disco front axle doesn't vacuum anymore needs to be bypassed.
:repair:
That is all.

so for maybe 2k you can have that one in good running condition. not too bad. and thats paying to have it fixed.

Yuppers, that was the idea behind it. His price range is like 4-5k, for less than that he can build this one including the price of buying it!

I just thought I would throw it out there. I will be taking a few pics of it this weekend and posting it up for sale if anyone is interested in a good base to build from.

aaa notified law enforcement and I called one as well.

So today I visited 4 jeeps from the valley to garden grove to Rialto to Fontana.

An xj that can roll with 4 wheels is an automatic 1700 bucks. No matter what. If it drives, then add another 1000. No pink slip, and 3 years out of reg adds another 200.

This is almost getting fun. I'm going to start video taping my visits.
"this 1988 jeep is amazing. Just slap in a new engine, tranny, and weld in new floors. 2300 firm"

Consider a 2wd it will open a bunch of options. You can look at car-part.com and get prices on 4wd trans and 231 tcase as a worst case. Once you get a jeep and know the year, post up what you need as lots of us have spares that we'll part with cheeper than a dismantler. A hpD30 is an easy junkyard find as well as the bezel and linkage for t-case on pre '97 models.

In reality a good running vehicle is very valuable in the tight economy. Everyone has kids or friends that needs a safe daily driver. Cherokees are not much to insure and registration is cheep on a 10 yo vehicle so people keep the good ones. If your lucky you will find one with a blown up d35 or won't pass smog and the owner doesn't want to deal with it (even though the seller is responsible for smog in Ca).

my first on a 89 had a vacume leak, paid 700 plus registration cost 1000 to get it on the road.

my second 96 no title, random misfire, paid 600 but needed a motor(bad #2 cyl) so 1350 and it was on the road.

my current 00 had a bad trans seal, paid $2000 it had a RE4.5 kit and 31x

keep looking, good luck!

what is disco elim?
the 80's.

the front axle has a vaccum disconnect for the passenger axle shaft so it disengages the axle to save fuel and wear. some had it, some didnt. to get rid of it, just swap the axle shaft from a non disconnect axle. you can probably get one for free on here, or for very very cheap. it's a really simple fix. you'll probably want to pick up or make a blockoff plate for where the vacuum part went, which is also nothing to worry about.
if you went with chromoly shafts, you would be getting rid of that garbage anyways.

On mine the stupid little vacuum controller on the axle was still good so I just pulled it off slid the the tube over both shafts inside, set the vacuum arm to hold it in place and put caps on the vacuum nipples so it couldn't move. Front axle is now permanently locked together and I haven't had any issues in the last two years of driving it.

I will get some pics of my buddys jeep today and post up all the details.

mako - If you decide to pick up Nicks Jeep, I'll give you a good deal on a d30-disco axle with matching gears. As, I will be swapping in a geared D30 in my heep soon.

You can also use the lock-ring/nuts washers to keep it "locked" also.

I have an 89 xj that i would consider selling. Here is some real info about it.

4.0L Engine
AW4 Trans
NP242 TC
D35 Rear 30 front

The AC and heater actually work. 4x4 works. Tires are 30x9.5 Falken mountain ats with about 15,000 miles on them. Tires are still in great condition. 4 month old 3" rough country AAl kit. New water pump, Alternator, thermostat, fan clutch, rear main seal, stereo, cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. I drive this thing 500+ miles a week and have replaced alot of stuff on here since I bought it. It was kind of a piecer when I boiught it but now it is really reliable. I have not wheeled it, the only time it sees dirt is when I go fishing. It does not over heat at all, it used to but I flushed about seven cans of stop leak out of it from the previous owner and put a new thermostat in from Napa. This thing is literally ready to go. The body and paint are in good condition with the exception of the two dents.

Now the cons:

The headliner is gone.
There is a dent both of the doors.
Drivers seat has a tear in it.

Head gasket has an external leak. After I flushed the system it started seeping from the head, externally only. This happened about 20,000 miles ago and I have continued to drive it this way. The seepage has nearly stopped on its own so I just run it.

I love this jeep and drive it daily, however my job requires constant traveling and I just want to find something with a little more mileage and a few extra creature comforts. If you are interested hit me up I am located in Victorville.

Forgot to mention this rig has 190k on the clock

Call me if you want pics or anything. 7six0 five 0 eight 3005. sorry about the wierd looking number. just dont want a bunch of spammers hitting me up.
