Decent XJ's really are 4 wheel gold...in southern California at least. I got incredibly lucky to find the one I did. Have you looked much in Phoenix or Nor Cal?
so for maybe 2k you can have that one in good running condition. not too bad. and thats paying to have it fixed.
the 80's.what is disco elim?
the 80's.
the front axle has a vaccum disconnect for the passenger axle shaft so it disengages the axle to save fuel and wear. some had it, some didnt. to get rid of it, just swap the axle shaft from a non disconnect axle. you can probably get one for free on here, or for very very cheap. it's a really simple fix. you'll probably want to pick up or make a blockoff plate for where the vacuum part went, which is also nothing to worry about.
if you went with chromoly shafts, you would be getting rid of that garbage anyways.
You can also use the lock-ring/nuts washers to keep it "locked" also.X2
On mine the stupid little vacuum controller on the axle was still good so I just pulled it off slid the the tube over both shafts inside, set the vacuum arm to hold it in place and put caps on the vacuum nipples so it couldn't move. Front axle is now permanently locked together and I haven't had any issues in the last two years of driving it.
I will get some pics of my buddys jeep today and post up all the details.
