Visiting Colorado In January, Need Suggestions.

January is winter driving time.

Many of the normal off-road trails will be closed.
And please - please don't try to hit the outback alone.

On the plus side, I've heard that reservations at many of the resorts are down between 17-20%, so you might find a nice little cabin or bed&breakfast at a good price.

Montrose, Ouray, and Telluride are nice, but they are small - offering mostly landing points when trailing during the summer time.

If you're on an anniversay trip, may I suggest Estes Park. Lodging prices will be their lowest in January, and the town & scenery will be perfect to spark romance.

Ouray and Telluride are beautiful but telluride is kind of a tourist trap. But iv only been there in the spring I dont have the brass to drive around there in Jan.

x3 on Estes Park

S/W Colorado in the winter can be REALLY harsh. Wolf Creek Pass saw over 500 inches of snowfall last winter! 24" new in the last 48 hours and (possibly way)over a foot more expected by Wednesday.

Well I would pass on Estes. Not really that much to do there in the Winter.

Four Corners Area (Southwest) is where you said you were going...it's about 6-8 hours from Estes.

Hit Durango, depending on the temps you might be able to see the State Park down there. It has some cliff dwellings, pretty cool. Stay in Ouray a night or two. Find a place with some outside hot tubs. Nothing is better than that.

Telluride. You will run into some celebs, not that I would care about that. On your way back hit Taos. Then buy your bride something nice in Santa Fe.

Ouray is a good destination during the winter. You can take Lizardhead Pass, coming up from Durango, not too bad. Brings you in the Mountain Village side of Telluride.
Park there for the day. Take the gondula from Montain Village into Telluride. It's about a 10-15 min ride with great views. Shop, do what ever....Then drive to Ouray. Good little mountain town. You can watch the ice climbers, Hot springs, shopping. (I mention shopping because thats what my wife does in those little towns) We go there several times during the year. The roads are maintained really well.

Good luck on your travels

X5 Estes park !!

im not sure about january but when we went over to ouray in november it was a ghost town. prices were cheep but there was not much to do so we ended up driving over to telluride and walking the shops etc. we don't ski so that was out. id say go north to estes or the denver area. much more to do there in the winter.
