vacuum canister

Ive been trying to figure why my a/c will not blow through the front vents (only blows through defrost) and Ive cometo the conclusion that there is either a leak in the vacuum line that runs to the vacuum canister or the canister is not there at all. I know that the canister controls the hvac. Some one told me that the canister is mounted on the passenger side on the bumper. My xj was in a wreck before I bought it and the bumper was bent in on the passenger side.I recently fixed my bumper and trust me there was nothing there but the horn and what I think is the vacuum line that comes from the firewall and is not connected to anything. I think that the canister may have been lost in the wreck or broken and removed after it. Is that possible or is the canister just in a differant place. Its a 1996 2wd

please help

It certainly could have been smashed, etc. and removed. It may also have been relocated but if you have vac lines just hanging there then I would think it's gone. It is however kind of hard to find unless you have the (nevermind, you had the bumper off)...

Actually just looked at it and theres just one line hanging and it runs to the back of the car and then is screwed into the intake manifold. there is something that looks like a canister on the back passenger side of the engine there are 3 hose hook ups but only 2 hoses hooked up and i cant find the third

My 96 XJ started it's life as a 2WD and the vacuum canister was definitely behind the bumper on the passenger side. It can be seen in this picture. I moved it back when the JCR bumper was installed.

There should be a vacuum line running up the passenger side right by the battery. If you can't find the black football under the hood, then it's missing.

yep... definitly gone.... but wait did you actually do a 2wd to 4wd conversion?
Yes. I was building a 1989 XJ when a came across this very clean 96, 2-door, 2wd, 4.0, AX-15 XJ with a blown engine for $600. I already had all the parts, so it was pretty easy to swap.
