Twisted Dana 30 housing?

I have been woundering for a while why my passenger coil is bowed out and my driver side coil is straight like it should be. I think the only explanation for this is a twisted axle housing, has anyone seen this happen before? I would imagine that the best way to fix it would be to just go get another housing.

I Thought the Dana 30 Axle Tubes are Welded to the Pumpkin. Maybe I am Mistaken.

I had a Bowed Front Coil Spring on a Bronco 4x4 many Years Ago. I couldn't Figure Out why Except that the Angle of the Coil Pad was Off after I had Lifted it Higher. I used Coil Shims to Straighten the Coil Out.

Sometimes when a Person uses Coil Spacers this can Happen also. IMHO

Hope this helps.

How would you determine something is wrong without measuring, inspecting, or testing anything ? Are we supposed to guess if you have any lift or adjustable suspension parts ?

Stop by Harbor Freight and get the magnetic angle finder. Check the angle of both outer "C"'s. Been to the alignment shop recently ? What do you think they check when performing an alignment ?

I have determined something is wrong by looking at my axle, sorry it is hard to take measurments at 10:00 at night with no light. If your going to talk to me like I am stupid then leave, otherwise thanks for the help. I have a single adjustable upper on the driverside and adjustable lowers. The lift is a RockKrawler 3 link with 5.5inch springs with no coil spacers. I have been to the alignment shop a few weeks ago in my driveway, thats as in depth as I go because the alignment changes everytime I go wheeling.

The tubes are "plug welded " to the pumpkin and the CAD housing and these can break away, they don't appear to be though but I have seen it happen on other axles. I work at a offroad shop and we just built a three link on a 67 bronco, we welded a truss to connect both axle tubes together to prevent this from happening to his front axle.

Also with a 3 link all the stress is transfered though that one link, maybe that has something to do with it?

My bet is on a lift with no adjustable track bar or a wrongly adjusted track bar.

Check the caster on both sides of the axle, either with an angle finder or at the alignment shop. Caster should not change with every 4x4 trip if you have a well designed and properly installed lift kit.

Try posting an poorly crafted question on the Pirate4x4 BB and see what you get for replies.

Make sure your uppers are the same length?

You said you have one stock one and one adjustable??? That's odd...?

Its a 3 link he has only one upper.

One of my coils bows out while the other one is perfectly straight. for me, it all has to do with how the coil seats on the axle coil bucket and my front end being kicked slightly more forward then stock

Castor does not change with every wheeling trip, toe does. I have a rock krawler 3 link that is designed and installed properly. I also work at a offroad fab shop were we build custom coil over set ups, and all kinds of things. I have a slight idea as to how my suspension should be setup..... This Jeep has been beat on for 8 years.

There is a reason I don't touch pirates website and have never signed up on there.

I have seen this effect the springs as well and this is part of it but not all of it. I can't do any measurements until I get the Jeep on level ground and put back together. New ball joints, unit bearings, and chromo shafts. Wish I would have noticed the bowing before tearing everything apart.

Could the upper spring/bump stop mount be tweaked at all? It's only sheet metal after all.

I think you would be more prone to twisting the tubes if you ran radius arms. With your three link and old y-link there shouldn't of been much binding in the suspension. I have a slight bow to my passenger coil as well. I'm guessing my arms need adjusted, but I'll be curious to see what you find.

do you have any pics? my passenger side coil is bowed as well... running the same idea of lift, 2 lower RE long arms with one upper RE link on drivers side and am having trouble with steering... would love to see how you moved the track bar mount, i'm trying to get an idea of how i want to move mine up to match the high steer... thanks.

Take a look at the plug welds, were the tube goes into the housing. It should be easy to see if the tube has twisted. The weld will be broken and you will probally see a gap in the weld.

It does happen. Once you get it rotated back weld the plug weld and around the tube.
