Turdy-5 grenade...?

So I back out of the driveway today to head to work, put it in first and am letting the clutch out when just as the jeep starts moving forward i hear a nice loud clunk from the rear end... As I slowly start to pull away at idle-1200rpm, i hear a ratcheting/grinding noise very similar to the noise you hear if the t-case isnt fully engaged when shifting into 4L...

My first thought is a broken U-joint. I back straight into the driveway, hearing the same damn noise and park her... I was running late for work so real fast while i was waiting for the motorcycle to warm up I crawl under... Ujoints look/feel tight. I jacked up the ass end by the diff next, start the jeep and put it in gear and let the wheels spin. When the wheels are spinning there is a noticable ratcheting or grinding noise coming from the diff...

I didnt have any time to inspect it further before work, but I will be backing it into the garage tonight up on ramps and pulling the cover off the diff. Not looking forward to seeing what's going on in there... I have a feeling that something broke in the limited slip, but wont have any idea until it is actually opened up! Any suggestions or things to look for...? D35 3.55 /w factory limited slip and zj disks...

X2 -- I agree with both the spider gear comment and the 8.25 replacement suggestion.

I happen to have a complete D35 open carrier sitting on my shelf. Unfortunately I welded it to some steel and made a book-end out of it.

Last 3.55 geared 8.25 I bought cost me 80$

you can pay $50 for some spiders.. or you can pay $100 for a whole upgrade axle..

C'mon.. switch to store brand soda and mayo for 1 week and do the right thing

I've got a '91 D35 with 3:55 gears you can have if you leave me the busted one for scrap......

Or I've got an 8.25 29 spline 3:55 gears for $100.... but I need the D35 to go under the parts rig that one is under so I can roll it around......

PM if any of that helps......

Opened up the 35 so I could pull the C-clips and yank the axles to get my disk brake backing plates off... Turns out it wasn't spider gears after all, they looked fantastic. Looks like a couple broken teeth on the ring and a couple more on the pinion... Also looks like a few pieces came out of the limited slip as well... Pretty happy I was pulling out of my driveway when this decided to let go!!!

Some broken stuff pics for those who care!

Baggy of metal that came out... about 95% of what fell out that didnt fall into my oil catch pan...

I couple of the larger pieces and some little clip looking thingy im guessing came out of the limited slip...

Here's what was causing the noise that sounded like ratcheting...

Another view of the "ratchet"

were those stock spicer gears, or perhaps Genuwhine??

what's your setup (tires/lift/etc.)? I mean turdy-fives are weak, but rolling out the driveway is a pretty weird place for the ring gear to start spitting out teeth!

Just a 4" lift, 31's, and a limited slip. Nothing special. I thought it was pretty damn odd too... Considering I only had the axle in there for just over a month... Opened it up when I got it and inspected everything and it looked OK then (No giant metal chunks at least!).
