Well, since you asked...I think they are uglier than ass. Would tow fine though.

With that engine and a nearly 40 gal tank I'm guessing it does not get the best gas mileage.

Would most likely see 11mpg at BEST unloaded. Will tow pretty much anything with ease tho. I would rather have an actual TRUCK if you are going to do that.
My vote is still a 6.0L for a gasser, I guess if you can find a killer deal on a 2500/3500 pickup with an 8100 go for it.

Also, possibly look into the GM 1500HD, is basically a "heavy 1/2 ton" with a 6.0L, or the Vortec MAX which is a 1500 non-HD with a 6.0L
Or, if you are lucky.. not sure exactly when they stopped making them, but there was a GM dealer in PHX that used to have a 'Thunder' pkg. Which was a whipple SC'd 5.3 with a tune.
