I've been hearing the Tread Lightly commercial on my local radio station constantly. They say go to respectedaccess.org to find local public off highway trail maps instead of being illegal.

My question: WHY bother airing the commercial when the Forestry Service has closed all public land and there's NO WHERE public to ride?

That's like saying "Hey, please don't wheel on this power line. We want you to wheel on this public land that we've supplied you with. Wait, we're just kidding, we don't have any public land for you to enjoy."

The closest thing to me that's public is URE and this radio station doesn't reach URE! WTF!

Right, this wasn't exactly aimed at the site. It was more aimed at the commercial on the radio. It specifically says, "Go to this website to find trails dedicated to off-highway vehicles." They went on to clarify that an Offroad vehicle was defined as a 4 wheel drive multiple occupant vehicle, like a Jeep.

Show me one single publically open trail in South Carolina. For that matter, show me one open trail in that radio stations broadcasting area.

I hate stupid people.

There are plenty of forest service roads in SC. Maintained, and unmaintained. The 'trails' they are referring to are not going to be replacements for Tellico, I fear those days are over. But there are hundreds of miles of FS roads to explore out there. Some are a lot more challenging than you may think. Do some google research on National forest for SC, and you will likely find a fair amount of places to explore. If public 'hardcore wheeling' land is what you are looking for, you likely wont find it... and if you do, it wont be for long. Too many idiots out there do dumb stuff on the few legal trails we have now is what gets them all closed. That's what Tread Lightly is all about, educating the uninformed when it comes to properly using off highway vehicles without destroying local habitats and ecosystems. Unfortunately in the South, they have their hands full.

I agree. That's what I'm looking for. Somewhere I can ride for a while and put up a tent beside a river...

I'd mostly be interested in something that the red Jeep could do. I've called myself searching but there's nothing on that site.

Yeah, for whatever reason, forestry service websites can be obscure. A great place to start would e over on Expedition Portal, in the South East Expedition Society section. Thats where we plan all of our events, and there are quite a few from SC.

Also, take a look on www.georgiaoverland.com I think some of Davids stuff goes over into SC.

Some are a lot more challenging than you may think.

At LBL, I think they have a few hundred miles of just backroads. While it's no technical obstacle course, there are some gnarly sections. Pretty fun too (and free)!

That's more my style of wheeling, Honestly I could care less about rocks I understand that If im on these type of roads that it is possible to come across them. But I really just like driving out in nature and through the woods with some obstacles here and there.
