Transmission shop

Looking for recommendations for a local (Bay Area preferably) transmission shop. I do not know the history of the '99 with the AW4 I bought is, but from the looks of the aftermarket hitch and wiring it was used to tow things. What I would like to do is have the tranny rebuilt/refurbished so that I can start a history with it. Any info on shops that you do business with that are familiar with this tranny or Jeeps in general would be great. Thanks.

I don't get this. I understand wanting some piece of mind when it comes to AW4 transmissions (:anon:). I just couldn't justify the expense if it is shifting/working correctly.

Considering the number of special tools required to rebuild the AW4 correctly I doubt most trans shops will even have them. Might want to call around and ask if the shop has the tools before driving there? If you are serious about getting a fresh transmission. My suggestion would be to go find a local repair shop and have them install a MOPAR reman trans assy. Comes with a 3 yr warranty and any warranty issues can be handled at a dealership. A good auxiliary trans cooler is also recommended.

I had a '76 Chevy Blazer that had a transmission that shifted and worked properly until I took it to Carnegie to check out the new lift. Ended up driving home in 2nd gear. You may be right on shops not working on these units, but I find that hard to believe seeing how many are out there. If I can't find a local shop or it is to pricy then I might just go with a different unit. Don't know yet just seeing whats out there and what are my options.
