So ive got a 98 XJ sport auto. So it has D, 3rd gear, then 1-2 gear. Me and my brother have done some trails together, and hes a stick and just crawls down mountain when he puts it in first, well i have to stay on the break b/c its 1-2 gear? Is there anything i can do to help slow me down and just creep down without using the break all the way, or is the only thing i can do is regear?

O and also what transfer case do i have? Its still stock?

I have seen an article in Modified Tech about manipulating the shift solonoids. I'm OK with the 1-2 position, although I'm on 31s.

If your TC lever has two choices for 4 wheel drive, you have the NP-231. If it has three choices for 4 wheel drive, you have the NP-242. Neutral is not one of the choices.

But i got 32s so theres not much difference, but my brother just puts it in 1st and never touches the gas and just crawls, but i have to eather stay on the break, or use the break quite often

That's good to know Frank. I'm pre-OBD, no light to tell on me. :shhh:

I've got the same issue - it's just part of having an automatic. If you put it in 4LO and keep it in 1-2, that'll slow you down a lot. I end up running in 4LO a lot when going downhill, even on easy stuff, just to keep from riding the brake constantly.

If you have the money and are so inclined, Currie sells a 2LO kit that you install in your transfercase to give yourself a 2 wheel low range. That's fairly high up on my list of future upgrades.

32s and stock 3.55s? You're going to end up rolling quite a lot when going down hills. I'd recommend a regear to 4.56 before the AW shifter mod described above. That will make a huge difference both on and off the trail.

You have either an NP242 (2wd - 4part-time - 4full-time - N - 4LO )
or an NP231 (2H - 4H - N - 4L)

By the way - you use the brake to stop the vehicle, otherwise something might break.

As said above, it's just part of having an automatic. If you don't like it perhaps you should switch to a manual transmission. Be wary of water crossings at the bottom of brake-heating hills lest your brake rotors turn into potato chips.
