Transfer case whine

Just picked up a 97' with 196,000 on it everything works fine besides a noise coming from transfer case. It whines under acceleration or normal driving. When i left off the gas it goes away. Any clue what it might be?

That actually sounds like the symptoms for pinion bearing whine, not transfer case. It is hard to tell where the sound is coming from since both radiate through the body. If it whines at lower speeds, ie. less than 45, try putting the tcase in low range and get it up to that speed and see if it sounds the same. If it does, it is not the tcase.

^^what he said, and you could also pull the rear shaft and drive with the front wheels pulling, if sound goes away it would narrow it down to the rear pinion.

Okay so i checked the fluid, all is good there. I appreciate the input. It whines around 20-45 after that it isnt as loud but still noticeable. Ill try pulling a shaft and driving it.

Heres the other issue..

After work i was driving down a drifted road and met a truck, so i locked it in 4-hi and went around him.. (Let off the gas) and shifted up into 2high and heard a loud pop. Chain stretched?

Thanks!

Probably not. Shifting on the fly can do that when the gears actually disengage.

Im thinking it could be the linkage. Move the lever just a tad back and it quiets down.. Im going to adjust it soon and hope that helps.
