transfer case issues

:gonnablow Ok so here is the problem. I am in the prosses of removing my Tera 4:1 case because it was not working and got it to pull about 1/4" away from the tranny(aw4) and now it is stuck. I can wiggle the t-case but it seems that the splines in the input shaft are stuck. What is the best way to try and remove the t case without damaging the tranny or t case? I was trying a crow bar but that just nicks up the case. I am posting this here to see if you guys have a good shop in the bay area that could get this thing out if I cant.

Thanks

It'll come out, probably just some RTV holding it, that stuff can be very sticky.

Give the front of the case a couple of whacks with a rubber mallet while prying the cases apart with a crow bar. It will move, there is nothing but the bolts retaining it in place.

Well I tried this last night and still not budging. It almost seems like the spines might be damaged. Its just really weird that it would come out about a 1/4" and THEN get stuck. I was thinking of putting a thin piece of steel against the trans and then using a cold chisel to try and pry it out?? what do ya think. Ar this point I really could care less about the tera case, I just want it out so I can put the 231 back in and be able to drive.

Can it shift at all?
did you try to shift gears to help free it up?

Next put your purse down and beat it open!

Its just the Tera front half of the case. I took all the 231 stuff out of it to put back the 231.

Sorry got it
Can you turn the shaft at all?
Have you tryed turn the shaft as you pull on it?

Bigger hammer? :confused1

Don't be offended, you sure you got all 6 nuts and the shift linkage?

Not offended at all, Yep all 6 nuts (checked about 9 times) and no shift linkage hooked up. I guess I will try the wedges and a bigger hammer.

That is freaking odd. You must still have teh input shaft in place, right? That's snap ringed from the front. Can you turn the input shaft (from within the front case half) with the trans in neutral?

No the input shaft is out, everything is out of the case. This is only the Tera case half with the planateries in it, but if I do put the shaft in, it will spin with the tranny in Nuetral.

Yup, time to drop the purse and hit that SOB harder.

Did you put it on with JB Weld? No wonder you are asking this question, it should drop off!

Ya this is driving me nuts, its time for the BFH, or maybe this:explosion

Well I got it off !!! Had to use two 1" cold chisels as wedges and it popped off. So here is why it was on so tight. Seems it was the wrong case and the input shaft was to long and bottomed out at the splines on the tranny output shaft. Once i got it off and pulled the bearing retainer the main front bearing on the t case fell apart and the needle bearing inside of the planiteries was toast also. Time for a new case. The tranny seems to work fine so I got lucky there. Thanks for all the help!!!!!

So, now we know why the Tera wasn't working properly!
