Trans issues in a 95zj

So, back story time. My brother helped his friend and rebuilt the 42re behind the 4.0 in his buddy’s zj. It’s a 95, rotten but it’s his buddy’s first vehicle. I was not involved in the rebuild. From the info he’s telling me, it sounds like it’s getting tied-up trying to get into 2nd. First slips bad, but reverse is harsh. After work today I’ll be pulling plugs and checking pressure. I also have an ATSE book on the 42re covering early to late revisions. Anything I should watch for?
