I'm looking at getting a another XJ:

2000 XJ Sport 4.0L 156K (Rough Country 3.5" lift, 33" tires, Flowmaster 40, K&N Cold Air Intake) - $1500.

It has a problem: Torque converter code P0740, and when driven from a stop, the engine will rev but it wont go into gear for 3-5 seconds. The owner said it started happening occasionally 6 months ago, and that in the past two months it has happened more and more frequently.

Any ideas on what the problem might be? The owner is selling it as is, and I'm wondering how much it would be to fix it, and what experiences you all have had, if any, with these symptoms.

Thanks for your help!

A quick Google search finds this:

P0740 JEEP - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted

There is an AW-4 Service and Diagnostics Manual that is easily available by Googling. Follow the Diagnostic Test procedures and trouble shooting charts.

If all else fails, used Aw-4's with low miles are inexpensive and plentiful.
