Tool Porn

Hey all, last week i asked for your opinions on how to burn up some of my tax refund. I'm going to spend it building a work bench in my garage as well as a craigslist tool chest (aiming for a nice craftsman if i can find one)

That being said, i got to looking at Sear's tools and it's like tool porn on that site. so many options, so many great looking sets.

I'm looking specifically at the 260 pc mechanics set that comes in with molded 3 drawer box. I am pretty sure that is all i would ever really need, other than maybe some sweet ratcheting wrenches.

But there is also a 300 piece straight socket set that has probably every socket that i could ever imagine needing.

That being said, how much is too much? i know you can never really have enough tools, but i am am just your average handyman/wkend wrencher, but i always seem to have to borrow something from a neighbor.

What do you guys use? whats a good rounded set? i mainly just have pieced together sets right now (and one decent 50 piece craftsman set).

Later!

i HAVE that set. bought by my wife for christmas gift. its great. has everything you need BUT you will need to get some pliers and screwdrivers and your good... ratcheting wrenches are awesome as well.

oh and a BIG A$$ Hammer :D

A big A$$ hammer is a must and a strong pipe that will slide over the end of your ratchet.

you just named the number one reason why ratchets break prematurely  a long breaker bar is 100X better than a pipe over a 1/2" ratchet

$180 when you join the craftsmen club for free. Dose almost everything on the jeep and everything Ive ever done in the house. Just fill it in with a few specialty tools, a screw driver set amd some larger wrenches and sockets.

the only thing i hate about buying tool sets like this is the 45+ allen wrenches that comes with it that are there to basically up the number size on the kit. now i understand that they serve a purpose somewhere, but out of the 45 they give you, theres usually only about 5 you will use

I was looking to buy a similar set. My previous set was like that but with ratcheting wrenches, lock jaws, and some bike tools. Unfortunately that was stolen from my Jeep in Gainesville FL. Right now my new job grants me access to an awesome set of Husky tools (in one of those huge rolling cases, pretty awesome) so I can still take care of things.

Anyhow, don't forget to take your set out of your Jeep if you park outside!

I only do that to my craftsmen ratchet :moon:. I wouldnt do that to my snap-on :twak:.

its all about pittsburgh from harbor freight :gag: they have a pretty decent 160 piece kit for 30 dollars that imma pick up here pretty soon!

I got a pittsburgh torx set a few months back and it said it had a lifetime warranty... Surprised the heck outta me.

Exact same as i have. I have a large rolling tool box in the garage but leave all this in the molded case so i can take it on the go with me. Added a few specialty tools as noted above...torx...MOST IMPORTANT if you ask me, there all over the XJ's. You'll be happy with it...love mine. BTW got mine at the after turkey day sale a few yrs ago, DIRT cheap like $110 IIRC.

I bought the 260 piece a few years back and it has done everything i have needed it for. You will also need the usual pliers and wrenchs but you cant go wrong with the craftsman sets. Join the Craftsman Club for free and you will save a lot more. I found that out after I bought mine. :tears: Good luck and happy wrenching!!

I have the same set as well... I love it. Like everyone else says, screwdrivers, pilers/vise grips, and a BFH. A torx set is almost essential with a Jeep as well.

Don't forget the ever needed 33 MM axle nut socket.

The warranty is only as good as the tool... If it brakes every time I used it, it doesn't matter how good the warranty is. I don't have time to run to the store every time I need to work on something. Lol. However, the bad thing is that if you brake something you got off a tool truck, you have to track him down to get it replaced, and if he has to rder it, it can take a while sometimes. So, in all reality, each has its own set of pros and cons. BUT, if I buy store bought tools, they won't be from Harbor Freight.
