TJ Rear Ends

What rears are common in '97+TJ's? I know that Rubi's and Unlimiteds (LJ?) supposedly have Dana 44s, but what was available in 'normal' Wranglers. I have a co-worked asking me questions, and the subject of rears came up. Other than killer high prices for JUNK, I'm at a loss for some of the facts surrounding the Wrangler. Thanks for any input!

my buddy's 06 tj came with a limited slip d44 rear and it was not a rubi. d30 front though.

The rear axle in a common garden variety TJ is a Dana 35.

All Rubicon and Unlimited models of the TJ/LJ came with a Dana 44.

Dana 44's can be found in models that were neither Rubicon or LJ too. My brother in law had a 98 with a Dana 44 that he sold last year, and my neighbor down the street just bought one(year unknown), that also has a 44(not a Rubi or LJ).

Tj Rubicons came with Dana 44 front and rear and the Dana 35 is not uncommon in other trim packages. But the gears in the Dana 44 rear are for a d44 Rubicon only. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the replies! I was afraid that the D35 would be common. Two of our fleet of four XJs came with the 35, one's been replaced with an 8.25, and the other complains occasionally. Those were the two with Posi, though.

i think you interpreted folks post wrong.

Like most everyone said, the D35 was the Standard axle for the TJ, except in the Rubicon (TJ) and Unlimited(LJ) models.
Considering how many TJs there are out there in all trims, you are far more likely to find a D35 under a TJ than a TJ which someone spent the extra money to put the factory option D44 under it.

D44 was an option in any TJ with a 4.0L engine. A lot of Sahara's came with them as well. It is not just a Rubi axle.

The TJ did not have a D44 option till I believe 1999. At that point they were an single added option or the most common was the canyon package, which had the D44 as part of it.

For the D44 that were in the TJ, all the non rubi's had the 3.73 ratio (that I have ever seen, which is alot), and a posi.

The LJ had a elusive 3.55 in the first year auto and 3.73 in all the non rubi, otherwise.

The TJ/LJ rubi had the D33 with 4.11 and thick cut gears so they fit All the 3 series D44 carriers.

The biggest issue with the D44 in the TJ/LJ both rubi and std is that the center section has the least amount of structual ribbing and the axle tube ends are much smaller then the typ D44 in Everything else. 2-5/8"

Not to mention the smaller dia tube was the thinnest ever offered in a D44. They did this because they wanted to use the SAME EXACT Tubes, tube end flange, brakes, and mounts as the D35 in the same years.

my old '06 TJ sport was factory equipped with a rear D44 geared 3.73 ... only non- sport base option was rubicon wheels/tires from the factory.
