So I just bought a new tie rod end because my tie rod end that is connected to the pitman arm is tore up(The bushing that is). I cannot get it off for the life of me. I used my mini sledge and a cro-bar in every way possible to try and pry or beat it off (no pun intended). I even yelled at it and no luck. Can someone give me some insight about how to take this F'ing thing off! Im about to take it to a shop and let them deal with it.

Thanks

i dont think the TRE on the pitman arm (or any TRE for that matter) has a bushing, it is just a dust shield to keep the grease clean.

however, you dont want to beat on the TRE to much, cuz if you mushroom the thing, it will never come out.

you can rent a puller from the LAPS for a deposit of $50ish and pull it out pretty easy. you get all your money back when you return the puller.

what usually works for me is to take the castle nut off, and put it on upside down and hit that with a BFH. this way you dont booger up the threads on the TRE and you dont bend the ears on the castle nut.

the puller is fail-safe usually.

Pitman-arm puller. Works for me every time. I recently replaced all the tie-rod boots with poly ones; if you don't beat the piss out of the ballstud you can usually get away with just new boots. Now you're going to have to replace the whole tie-rod end.
EDIT: jeepnuts311's method of turning the nut over and beating it is relatively safe, too.

Get a pickle fork!

You need to ball peen hammers. A Big one and a small one. Put the small on aginst the pitman arm on the outside edge then hit that hammer with the big one. works every time!

Ok done and done, I just talked to my mechanic friend a bit ago and he told me to hit the pitman arm. Alls I did was tap the pitman arm twice and it fell out. Rediculous, I beat the hell out of that tie rod end and just 2 little taps on the pitman and it falls out. Nuts! Thanks everyone

not sure what ur hitting if its the pitman arm or the TRE but hitting the pitman arm where the TRE goes through it will ussually break the taper, if it dont work u will need a puller.
