Thrush Welded Muffler Review

This muffler hasn't really been covered much on this website, aside from a select few members (none of which have posted I video that I could find).

I heard a while back that the Thrush Welded muffler was a $30-40 knock off of the Flowmaster 40. So, I picked one up at Advance Auto parts yesterday, and installed it in place of my stock muffler. I left everything else in the exhaust system stock, 2.25'' diameter. The job came out wonderfully, and for the $40 I paid the sound is amazing! Sounds a hair quieter than the Flowmaster 40 on my dad's TJ, but overall the same exhaust note. (I think part of this may be due to the fact that the TJ exhaust is over a foot shorter, affects the sound)

I will post a video later this week (if requested).

For those of you looking for that noticeable rumble, I highly suggest the Thrush Welded muffler!!!

The butt dyno has felt something, yes. I think it may be partially due to the crappy stock muffler I had. If I had to make a guess, I would say 1-2 hp from freeing up the exhaust some.

Regardless of the butt dyno, just putting your foot down and hearing that grumble is soooo nice.

(the video posted sounds pretty close to mine. maybe a hair louder due to the hi-flow cat)

I love mine. No droning at highway speeds for me. I cant even hear it really. Although I still have the stock cat. Im thinking of going to a glasspack though...I like being loud and annoying:)

The Turbo and Welded mufflers are different mufflers, and both come in a variety of inlet/outlet sizes, configurations, and lengths. Generally you measure your existing muffler, and find a replacement with the correct inlet/outlets and length. If you don't want to do that, put it on and make it work.

Well, the bodies are anyway.

They are about the same length. In the Thrush line the Turbo's are 18.5" in our pipe size, and the welded is 19".

If you are going to replace an OEM stock muffler with a Turbo or Welded, you will need to add some pipe as the Stock muffler is loooong.

I went with a Flowmax Afterburner. It has a nice note, and is not noticable on the highway (I run a cat so that helps alot). I doubt if it increased the MPG or available power, but it has outlasted the $30 press together jobs the Autoparts store had been selling me. What is nice about either the Turbo or Welded mufflers is that they are considered "oem type mufflers" and will catch sparks.

Look on Thrush's website- they show distinctly different internals.

They also sell tailpipe kits for XJs as well, MX. That's another option you might consider.
