How in the world can these people who come to this country and can't speak a lick of english survive? I work at a bank and they can't even come in a explain to me what it is they need. Sometimes, I spend 30 min. trying to figure out what they are asking for. I honestly don't understand how they can live here, hold down a job, and live everyday normal life, but I guess somehow they do....

Just ponders me....

Because our wonderful government has allowed them to do so.

I do not see anything wrong with coming to the US and not being able to speak English. I have a problem with them not learning to speak English after being here for a year or two and worst yet not trying to do so. Yes, the politicians allow it so they could get votes and stay in power and the businesses also make it possible by providing them with all the need to know in other languages.

Speaking of myself, the first time I went to work in South America I did not know a single word in Spanish. However, pride and ambition pushed me to learning the language so I could communicate with the locals and learn their culture. I would like to also learn French. Maybe I can learn it here in the US by getting a French girlfriend and get my lessons by the way of pillow talk.

This. Having been to several foreign countries and not knowing the language, I took it upon myself to learn as much as I could....most of it on the go. Not knowing is one thing, not wanting to learn is completely different.

I work in O'Reillys and we have people coming in asking for someone who speaks Spanish. Honestly they believe they should be catered too, and to many stores are making this a ploy for business.

I would like to learn spanish. I work for a very ethnically diverse company and would like to learn more than what i've just picked up. Way too many languages here to learn them all. We have chinese, Indian, Hispanic, Japanese, Several African languages, portugese, Russian and god knows how many more working in this facility. I don't have time to learn all those languages. The predominant minority here is hispanic so i'll be taking classes soon.

isn't that waht a business is supposed to do? If you are willing ta cater to your customer base better than the competition, you will be the one rewarded with their business.

This is an excellent statement.....I didn't know you had any sense in you! :D

Im all for equality and you wanting to come to this country to better yourself and your family, but learn english. simple english to get you by and continue to learn...you think I would go to another country and live there and not learn that language? absolutely not...

I knows bit of German, Danish, French, Spanish, and Japanese simply because I had to learn it to adapt.

Just be glad the USA is not like Quebec where they have French language police where a business can be shut down at will for violating the language laws.
