Picked up a WJ with a broken piston skirt, found an engine locally with reportedly 15K miles and two years old but seller could not provide documentation. So as not to get beat on a tale i asked Lee at Hesco if he could verify the age of this engine.

Gave him the serial number (from a pic i have with a Hesco tag) and he replied he has no records on such number. Sent him the pic and he informed me there was a co in Kentucky using the Hesco name... before they went belly up... and this was their engine. He suggested i stay away from it.

Does anyone have any input on Hesco Parts Company out of Louisville, KY? Were the engines that bad? I was hoping to save some time by buying this vs having mine redone if after torn down it warranted machine work.

Seller wont come down on $650, should i walk away?

I would stay away and do a rebuild to yours, bore/hone the cylinders, piston/rings, new bearings, check the crank and if all is good seal it up and call it good

Yeah, the seller and i cant come to a price where i'd feel comfortable buying this engine. Even as a potentially temporary replacement..

I'm going to be pulling the head off this engine in a few days and inspect the problem cylinder, hopefully the block is ok.

Recommend a good overhaul kit? What should i figure for machine work if needed?

Been lucky with the 5 4.0l trucks we've had, not one has had to have the head off in the time we had them, mine currently has 150k and the other 3 Xj's all had over 200k when they were either totaled or scrapped!

This Jeep has 152K, one owner and very clean. I bought it very cheap...

I cant mic the cylinder and inspect for gauging without removing the head.. which i will shortly.

Where do i buy a good quality overhaul kit? It doesnt make much sense to me to replace one piston.

I would go with something by Napa or see if rockauto has anything, as long as the gaskets and such are decent name brands I would be sold on the kit

THat must be a regular thing on those 4.0's a friend at work had the same thing happen to her 02 WJ, her friend charged something like 500+ parts to rebuild hers.
