The end is near?

Glad to see you are going to get it back up and running. I am still sinking money into mine, just to verify that the engine is good too. Its got 155k, and while it isn't the cat's meow I, like you, have enjoyed some of the countryside that my last '94 took me to. I have the Scouts as well, but those are a totally different beast. I loved and missed my last XJ when it departed my house on a trailer headed for Northern MO. The new owner needed another DD for work, and he was wanting an XJ, and I couldn't carry any insurance on it from my accident, so I had to move on. When I found this one, the price was real cheap($375), it wouldn't start, and was relatively clean. It still needs TLC, but I am going to make it what I couldn't make my last one into. I have just a tad bit of troubleshooting left, then its fix the items needed to make it a DD again. Eventually I will be in the market for a '99 that needs some mechanical work, but has a clean body, and then the wife will have one for DD for herself, and I can mod the hell out of my '94. Keep up the positive attitude and it will all work out, and as my wife says, "Everything happens for a reason".

Re: The end is no longer near?

Bought a pair of Brown Dog engine mounts. So we are getting closer. New motor goes in on Tuesday.

Brown dogs are badass!

Good deal you getting that low mileage 4.0L!

I was going to suggest getting a beater XJ off craigslist for cheap then at least you would have a XJ to get around in while getting a salvaged motor put in your primary XJ.

Nothing wrong with having multiple Jeeps! :gee:

Well,

The first motor turned out to be a 97 ZJ motor. Regardless of the yards insistence that they pulled it from a XJ.

Here is the next contestant for installation in the Jeep. They claim it came out of one with 90K. I'm not sure I believe that either.

Re: born! It is back!

Got the heep back yesterday afternoon. Drove it around this weekend and there are some kinks to work out; i.e., idle is a little rough but likely related to the TPS and the throttle body. The motor from the junk yard sounds smooth. It might have only 90k on it, but likely sat for sometime. Going to pull the old TB to clean it and re-use it.

I am not sure that the polyurethane motor mounts was a good idea as it transfers engine vibration very well. Mostly noticeable at low RPMs.

Thanks to all for the commiseration and the advise.

I had poly MMs on my 91XJ. They vibrated like crazy for a while until they broke in a bit. I would have used stock-type if I had known; it was irritating.

btw, the work on this was farmed out to a mechanic that I know and who has worked on this Jeep for me and often with me. My total expenses with labor was $1600 for a complete engine swap. The guy did me a huge favor; if anyone needs a mechanic in the Chicago area, send me a note.
