The Cradle Build Thread

Bent

I haven’t been around here in a while but I didn’t fall off the planet, just into a big bin of sawdust; fancy sawdust. As many of you know, my first grandchild was born at the end of January. Long before my son and daughter in law decided to start their family I had decided I would be building them a cradle. I had the design finalized well before Gabby was born but I got a late start on building. At least I was done before she started kindergarten. Here are a couple of photos of the project in process; not enough to get the thread moved to another forum, though.
;)

It all started out something like this. Well . . . exactly like this.

After endless miles of scribbles and revised revisions of re-scribbled scribbles I ended up with this.

Simple enough; all I would need to do was print it out, tape it on some wood, pour water on it to transfer the ink and come back in a few days and it ought be ready to deliver.
:yelclap:

After four hours at the lumber yard, Two hours marking cuts and an hour or so on the saw all I ended up with was this.
Head_Cuts-1_edited-1.jpg

Half of a day dancing with the drill press and a lot more time with the table saw and I still had nothing but parts; just more of them.

Put all of the square pegs in every square hole you can find.

Make more jigs for the saw and one for the drill press while you're at it.

Use the left side first for the ends. Latter the right side for the support posts.

Back to the saw.

And then drill more holes.

Some holes get threads and some holes don't.

This is beginning to look like a picture thread. Look away, look away . . . LOOK AWAY!

Just so you know, threaded holes can be your friend if you plan on taking something apart after you put it together so that when you put it back together yet again with the intention of someone else taking it back apart at a later date, they’ll be able to.

It only looks bent.

For the record;

You get the point.
:D

Sorry about the ugly guy that jumped in front of the camera; I did what I could do without getting blood on the carpet.

No ugly guy but still not the greatest of pictures. Maybe it's the camera? I need to go back and get some shots with better light.

P.S. oh, by the way, that is a beautiful job you did!!!!!!!!!! now come play with my wood, the dining room table is calling for your skillz

very very nice work Tim! Cribs and bassinets are pretty damn expensive and usually fall apart. That looks very solid!

You should make some aftermarket parts for woody waggies. Wooden rock rails, wooden suspension seats, wooden long arms... :)

TIm is that your first project out of wood?

Excellent.

Thanks for all of the compliments.

I've been at it awhile Mike; it is the first cradle I've built out of Mahogany, though.

I expect that this one will be around for a few years. The fact that it breaks down for storage will help too. The Cradle Gabby has been using while I finished this one is the one I built for Ethan when he was born . . . 19 years ago.

nice work! you make it out of mahogany?
Yes, Honduras. It was a little pricey but it offered great yield.
