Technical question for Oregon residents

I bought a motorhome a few weeks ago and would like to double tow with it. I would be towing my Cherokee then my 16' boat. Every thing I find on double towing in Oregon is for 5th wheelers and is illegal. I have never seen it done personly. I know when I worked in the tow truck industry, Tow trucks would tow other trucks with trailers hooked to them with no problems in Oregon.

I looked on the ODOT web site but I couldn't find anything on the subject. Really I am not towing a trailer I am towing a suv, The suv is towing the boat.

This is probably one of the dumbest posts I have done. I was really thinking that if it could be done I wouldn't have seen it. This is almost as bad as the time I posted about buckshot mud tires.

Well anyway This is what I am planing to start off with a letter to the state senator. This is what I have come up with so far.

Dear Mr.Metsger;



I am the proud owner of a motor-home a small suv and a small boat. The coach is able to tow up to 5000 lbs according to the manufacture. I would like to tow both my suv and my boat at the same time, But Oregon laws forbid me from doing so.

I am contacting you in regards of changing this law to conform with many other states towing laws. I have found that 31 other states allow towing doubles with no more then a small fee of 10 to 20 dollars and completing a online training corse. Something like how Oregon state marine board has handed the boaters education.

I am sure that if something like this would pass, it would collect a good amount of revenue for Oregon. I know that their are many other people in the same situation as me and would not have a problem paying a small fee and taking a internet based test to recive a towers education card. I am looking forward to hear back from you on this matter.

Most motorhomes are not set up properly to tow very heavy loads at all. If you're saying you think your Jeep AND boat combined weigh less than 5k pounds, then just throw the raft on top of the XJ and call it good.

Go to Idaho:wow: It is legal in Idaho. Definately not in Oregon UPS can't even haul triples in Oregon in the winter.

Yes I know I suck at spelling and grammar. I will go over it with spell checker and have my 14 year old go over it also. I know thats bad but I craped in my bed long ago so now I just deal with it.

Most motorhomes are not set up properly to tow very heavy loads at all. If you're saying you think your Jeep AND boat combined weigh less than 5k pounds, then just throw the raft on top of the XJ and call it good.

The boat is only 16' and aluminum maybe 1600lbs total with the trailer, The xj tows it no problem. I weighed the jeep when it was all stock it was just under 3000lbs and the only mods are 4 1/2" lift and 31". So yes I think there under the factory tow limit. I have also looked at the hitch setup and it's welded right to the frame since it's only a 28' coach.(not much over hang in the back)

But not quite so stout since I don't have to haul 10k. Then at that point I will do some work to the hitch on the coach or just build a trailer toad.
