I have a 1994 zj with a bad NP 249 and want to swap it out with a NP 231 or a NP242. What model jeep and year would I have to buy one of these T/C's to swap successfully?

I have a 23 spline for sale if you need one.

you should need a 91 up from an XJ for the splines to match up. You should need 23 splines on the input.

ZJ's also came with 231's, but I'm not sure about the 242.....if you find something other than a 249 it should be 23 spline from a grand.

ZJ's also came with 242's...more common in the later ZJ's (96-98).
