And yes, I tried search and NO, you can't search for SYE in threads:viking:

My Q

I'm in the market for an XJ and haven't settled on a year yet. I do have plans to go about 4.5" into the atmosphere with something around a 31" in 1 form or another. I see peeps talk about "well on a post '97, you'll definately need a SYE" . Is the pre '96 less prone to vibes from drive angles ? I'm trying to stay away from a SYE for simplicities sake, but I'm not totally against it. If I can get away with 4.5" on an early XJ, then I'll stick with those years. BTW, I will be using a trans drop as an easy fix.

There's no absolute answer to your question; every XJ is different. My advice would be to make room in your budget for an SYE, and lift your XJ. If you have vibes, install an SYE. If not, don't. I don't understand why you would lift your XJ to gain ground clearance, and then give up some ground clearance with a t-case drop, but to each his own I guess.

Ground clearance isn't an issue when all you're gonna do is drive on the beach. ( no rocks or good 'legal' trails near me , but alot of beach ) And I gotta put some altitude on it to get good wide tires that can float across sugar sand. Thanx for the info though. I've noticed alot of pics where people list the same size lifts and they all look different heights! Crazy, man !

You WILL get some form of vibes with a 4.5 inch lift...i dont care what anyone says....the degree of severity is what will vary.

Do it right the first time and save yourself some heartache later down the road....get an SYE!!

I had bad vibs at higway speed with only 2"BB, so when I went to 4.5" I didn't chance it. Went ahead and bit the bullet, A.A. and Woody, now its smooooth all the way from 0-90.
