Has anyone done this? Its pretty fun my parents have to ocean kayaks and they are a blast to take out and ride the surf. Im looking to buy a kayak that is better designed to handle the surf...

I have done it with just a sea kayak. It was fun, but I got destroyed by the waves. Wasnt able to really control it very much, but it was fun notheless.

I would think one of the small stubby kayaks that are doing the whitewater rapids and that kind of stuff would work really well for the surf.

Yaks boards are made for the surf which are stable but have more mobility then the sea kayaks. Ive gone a couple times, the first i to got thrashed but the second time i was light years better.

My friends and I usually use the sit on top kayaks. I've run into a guy several times that was using a white water, but he could mostly do tricks and not ride the surf as well. Here on this part of the east coast there are mostly just swells that finally break about 10ft from shore where it is only 2ft deep. The surfers have a hard time riding a wave for more then 3 secs. With the kayaks it's easier to catch the small swells.

I use my Whitewater kayak to surf. The waves on the East Coast aren't the best as mentioned in previous post. First time out I found out what it feels like to get driven into the sand on my head. Having a wave crash down on you with a boat ontop to catch the energy and weight of the water sucks! One day I was beyond the breakers and schools of snapper blues were feeding on the surface. I paddled to shore and got a hook, squid and about 20' of monofilament. I tied one end to the grab loop on the front of the boat and paddled to the breaking fish. I threw the bait out and in seconds a blue fish was spinning me in circles. I wanted to take it back to shore but was afraid to put it in the boat on my lap. I smacked its head on the boat to stun or kill it. It worked out fine. It later was rolled in Itailian bread crumbs and bathed in hot oil!

Some buddies from work did some surf/cave kayaking a few days ago and made a video/slideshow. I'll try to post it later today or tomorrow if I can get a copy. They just used sea kayaks, the 15'-17' ones.
